Tennis Event: Australian Open

Category: Grand Slam

Location: Melbourne, Australia

Date: January 14-27, 2013

Surface: Hard

The 101st competition of the Australian Open tennis tournament is a long running tradition for the first Grand Slam tournament of the year and one of the most respected and heralded sporting events of the year for athletes.

This impressive sporting event will include the usual top men and women’s professional tennis players in the world to watch or bet tennis matches on for two weeks of exciting matches and the Australia Open odds typically have some major upsets along the way.

In doubles matches, no pair has been more dominant than sisters Serena and Venus Williams, and they will be looking to take home Grand Slam trophy number 14 as a doubles pair on this hard court surface which is where they thrive.

The Williams’ sisters will also be a threat in the singles competition with Serena being the likely favorite of the two to make the finals in this first tennis Grand Slam betting opportunity of the season. Venus Williams is also on the mend with an upswing for her health and conditioning, so never count this brutally strong women’s tennis player out.

With all the usual suspects from Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to Andy Murray, David Ferrer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who is currently ranked number 8 in the world planning on being there healthy, this could be a great chance to speculate on some longer tennis odds when betting tennis in your BookMaker account.

Australia’s number 1 ranked men’s professional Marinko Matosevic was the ATP’s most Improved Player of the Year, so you can’t count out the home guy or the fourteenth ranked American John Isner who looks to power his way through with a devastating serve.

Sam Stosur will be Australia’s hometown favorite and best chance for the Aussies to hoist one of the Grand Slam titles this year in the women’s singles matches.

The women’s singles players include six of the world’s top ten women tennis professionals including the last year’s runner up and 2011 winner, Li Na from China. She is currently ranked number 7 in the world looking to move up that ladder.

Tennis Australia talked about increased prize money with both the WTA and ATP before announcing this year that the Australian Open will pay out more than any other tennis event in 2013 for prize money dished out per round. Increased money is always a good motivator for professional tennis players and tennis bettors alike.

The 2012 Australian Open Women’s singles saw Victoria Azarenka reaching her first Grand Slam singles final to face the World’s number 4 ranked Maria Sharapova.

After falling down 0-2 in the first set, Azarenka came back to tie the match at 3 games apiece in the first set and never looked back. She won the final 9 games winning her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open 6-3, 6-0 to become the world ranked number one after that.

The World’s number 1 ranked player Novak Djokovic won the 2012 Australian Open in a gladiator battle over second ranked Rafael Nadal 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-5 in what turned out to be the longest men’s Grand Slam final in the books by almost a full hour.

The longest match of any kind at the Australian Open lasted an exhausting 5 hours and 53 minutes before Djokovic finished off Nadal in the third consecutive Grand Slam final matching the same two warriors ending in the same result of Novak Djokovic winning and solidifying his number one World ranking.

Men's Final - Djokovic Dominates Late to Win Third Straight Aussie Open

Given the level of dominance Djokovic has shown for the last three years, especially in this tournament, it is now a surprise if he doesn't win. He has reached that place where Roger Federer was at his peak in the mid-2000s.

After dropping the first set 6-7, Djokovic stormed back to win the next three, 7-6, 6-3, 6-2 and captured his third straight Australian Open title and fourth overall.

Women's Final - Azarenka Wins 2nd-Straight Aussie Title

Victoria Azarenka has defended her 2012 Australian Open title by clinching the final of the 2013 Australian Open in a three-set affair against Li Na.

The World No. 1 didn't have everything go her way in this one—dropping the opening set 6-4—but given all the controversy and media drama that has surrounded her in the last 48 hours, she was simply never going to give up without a fight.

After breaking Na in the opening game of the second set, Azarenka raced to a 3-0 lead before the Chinese star twisted her ankle in what would be the telling story of the night. She would play on, but clearly under duress, and would never move the same again in this one.

Azarenka's disciple and phenomenal return game made it simply impossible for Li Na to gain any momentum in the third set, and after a horrific looking fall midway through the set, appeared to be simply helpless in the match.

Mixed Doubles - Gajdosova/Ebden Capture Mixed-Doubles Title over Hradecka/Cermak

In a thrilling finish to the mixed doubles tournament, Jarmila Gajdosova and Matthew Ebden captured their first Australian Open championship by defeating Lucie Hradecka and Frantisek Cermak.

Gajdosova and Ebden, who both reside in Australia, had the home crowd behind them and carried that momentum to an impressive victory. They had two service breaks in each set and took advantage of it in order to earn a straight-set win 6-3, 7-5.

After that Djokovic had the last chance to stand against the pressure as he broke Nadal’s service and eventually tied at 4-4. Nadal had all the chances to distance Djokovic by have the lead 5-4 in the final set but the defending champion roared with passion and power.

Trailed 5-3 in the fourth set tie break, Rafael Nadal dug deeper to come back and to tie the Australian Open 2012 Men’s Singles Finals 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7(5-7), over Novak Djokovic. Just when everything was going wrong, Nadal keeps his chances alive as he forced into a deciding fifth set in which anything can happen.

Djokovic hunger was greater than ever before when he outdueled Nadal in the fourth set tie break that allowed him to maneuver and won the Australian Open 2012 title for the second time in his career. It as a highly contested game that went to the Serbian again for the third time over Nadal.

Victoria Azarenka Routs Maria Sharapova To Win Title

Victoria Azarenka entered the 2012 Australian Open as the No. 3 ranked player, but fought her way all the way to the finals. In the finals, Azarenka took on Maria Sharapova and dominated the Russian in straight sets in one of the most lopsided Australian Open finals victories, winning her first Grand Slam title and taking the No. 1 ranking in the world.

There was no need for Azarenka to change the momentum however, as she dominated Sharapova in straight sets taking her 6-3 and 6-0 to pick up her first Grand Slam title. The match took just under an hour and half.

Azerenka was able to get the better of Sharapova thanks to her movement, as she did to win 12 of her last 13 matches.
