He stopped Fernando Verdasco's fantastic run in the semi-finals, and was able to reach his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final as a result. One more win this year and he takes home the trophy.

Who can forget Latvian Ernests Gulbis, who made a name for himself by upsetting World No. 1 Roger Federer in the second round. He rode high all the way to the semi-final, where he lost to the clay court wizard Rafael Nadal.

Speaking of Federer, he'll be back in hopes of a better showing this year -- but clay isn't his strongest surface. No matter, his all-around game should carry him deep into the tournament. Andy Murray was also a surprise early exit as well, but he'll return again in hopes of a better result this time.

After getting the better of Nadal in the finals on hard court at the BNP Paribas Open and the Sony Ericsson Open in March, many expected the Spaniard to right those wrongs come the clay-court season, during which he has been utterly dominant in recent years. Not so.
