Monfils had an impressive win over Roger Federer in the semifinals, holding on for a 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 victory in one of the top matches of the season. Monfils has made the tournament final for two consecutive years, losing to Novak Djokovic in three sets in 2009. Monfils also knocked off Andy Murray on his way to the finals.

Djokovic is battling a back injury, but as the No. 1 ranked player in the world, he should be considered a contender if he can compete in the tournament. Rafael Nadal is ranked No. 2 currently, followed by Federer, Murray and David Ferrer. Soderling currently sits at No. 6, followed by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Mardy Fish and Monfils. Tsonga won this tournament in 2008 so should be considered a viable candidate as long as he enters the tournament.

With the season winding down, expect most of tennis’ big hitters to play in the BNP Paribas 1000. Soderling is looking to defend his title, but there are plenty of capable players more than ready to knock him off.
