Join now and bet on Barcelona Open matches! The 59th Barcelona Open takes place in Barcelona Spain from April 23, 2012 to April 29, 2012. It is one of the most important events in Spanish tennis, just behind the famed Madrid Open. Robin Soderling, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Fernando Gonzalez, Fernando Verdasco and Lleyton Hewitt are all expected to be high-seeded players in this year's tourney.
Fernando Verdasco, the No. 9 player in the world, defeated Robin Soderling 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in a rousing title match last year. He was the eighth Spaniard in as many years to take the trophy on home soil -- joining the ranks of Carlos Moya, Tommy Robredo and Rafael Nadal. It's clear that there's a homefield advantage at play here.
Soderling, the tournament's runner-up, stated that he was much too passive in coming up short against Verdasco. The Swede could have ended Spain's long-running succession of title winners, but he'll have his chance again this year. He's already started off strong in several tournaments in early 2012.
Prior to last season, David Ferrer was the runner-up for two years running, losing to Rafael Nadal both times. Nadal isn't expected to play in this tournament, so he may have better luck this year. He generally plays very well in Barcelona and is one to keep an eye on.
Nadal's absence is significant -- he's one five of the six past years. Without him, there's no clear favorite. Of course Verdasco is the champion, but Soderling currently has the highest ranking. It'll be impossible to find odds until matches actually start, but stay current with match odds by checking on Bookmaker as the tournament progresses. You'll likely see a lot of inflated odds until the later rounds -- but it's fun to ride a horse into the finals.
2011 Results - Nadal clinches sixth Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell title
World No. 1 Rafael Nadal once more clinched the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell title, for the sixth successive time, overcoming his countryman David Ferrer in 1 hour and 49 minutes. The 6-2, 6-4 win is Nadal’s 34th consecutive victory on clay-court, regaining the Barcelona crown as he dropped out in 2010.
Over 8,000 fans enjoyed a great tennis final at the Real Club Tenis Barcelona featuring the world’s best clay-court specialists. Nadal, who claimed his second clay-court title this season after Monte Carlo, confirms his status as World No. 1 and now eyes three top tournaments on his favorite surface in Madrid, Rome and Paris, where he will face this season’s unbeaten Serb Novak Djokovic.
Nadal rushed through the first set while Ferrer broke his rival in the second set for a 4-2 lead. The World No. 1 fought back in-style achieving two consecutive breaks to cash his record sixth title.
