The Grand Slam season might not be on at the time on the ATP and WTA Tours, but that doesn't mean that we aren't going to have plenty of tennis betting action here on the horizon! The ATP betting odds and WTA betting odds are going to be contested in Acapulco, Mexico starting this year on February 27 to March 4.
This is a clay court tournament, which often draws many players from Spain, especially relatively recently. Needless to say, when you're talking about clay court events on the men's side of tennis tournaments, you have to talk about the play of Rafael Nadal. To no surprise, Nadal was the winner of this event in 2005, but he actually does not have a title here since that point. It is still unknown whether he will be giving it a go in Acapulco come February.
The defending champ on the men's side is fellow Spaniard David Ferrer, who took Nadal out of the Australian Open just last month. Ferrer became the third straight player from Spain to win this event and the seventh to do so since 1997. There have also been six different Spaniards in the finale.
Thomas Muster was the winner of this tournament in its inaugural event in 1993, and every successive year from that point through 1996. His four titles has not been touched and will not be in all likelihood for quite some time, but all three of Juan Ignacio Chela (2000 and 2007), Carlos Moya (2002 and 2004), and Nicolas Almagro (2008 and 2009) have won this event twice.
For the ladies, this event only dates back to 2001, and interestingly enough, there hasn't been a single player from any sort of Latin descent that has won the tournament. Venus Williams became the first American to claim glory here at the Abierto Mexicano, doing so in 2009, and she fired back with victory once again last year. There have only been two other women to capture this event twice in her career, with the first being Amanda Coetzer, from South Africa.
The most accomplished woman in the history of this tournament is Flavia Pennetta. She made it to the finale here in Mexico six straight years from 2004 through 2009, and she has two titles to show for her work on the clay courts.
Regardless of who you will be backing in this short tournament, Bookmaker Sportsbook will have all of the great tennis betting action available to you for both the men's and ladies' sides of the Abierto Mexicano.
