FIFA World Cup Betting: It's not every year that the Swiss successfully qualify for World Cup betting action, but this will mark the second straight tournament in which they have made the final cut. Switzerland could be one of the most questionable teams in this tournament, as six points and an ease trek to the knockout round and no points and an embarrassing elimination in three matches are both distinct possibilities.
Following a 3-1 loss at home to Luxembourg, the Swiss had to be wondering whether or not they were even capable of making it to this level or not. Five straight wins later answered that question. Switzerland swiped one of Europe's automatic qualifying bids to South Africa, with a scoreless draw at home against Israel on the final match day of qualifying.
There aren't many people, let alone soccer players, in Switzerland that are more recognizable than F Alexander Frei. Frei leads his country in scoring with 40 career goals in 73 appearances. He netted a pair of goals in the '06 World Cup in Germany and was really the main reason why the team made it through to the knockout round. As the captain of this team, Frei is going to have the weight of the entire country of Switzerland on his shoulders.
The Swiss are going to find the sledding in Group H tough, but they are capable of meeting the task at hand. The team didn't allow a goal in the World Cup four years ago and will need to pull that type of feat off again to survive into the second round and beat the World Cup odds. Still, with a prospective match with Brazil waiting in Round 2, the Swiss have virtually no chance of duplicating their three trips to the quarterfinals. This team is a longshot at best at +20000 on the World Cup lines.
