Phoenix International Raceway

Phoenix International Raceway is, literally, like the mythical phoenix. The race track located just west of downtown in Arizona’s capital city rose from the ashes of a fire, started by a lightning strike, that burned down most of its main grandstand in 1987. The next year, however, Phoenix International Raceway came back from that sad day to being a new era in racing in the Southwest. NASCAR’s Winston Cup Series, now known as Sprint Cup, made its first visit to the 1-mile oval in 1988 and Phoenix has been flying high ever since.

Phoenix International Raceway sits in the foothills of the Estrealla Mountains. Built in 1964, it first served as a desert oasis for American open-wheel racing. IndyCars made 58 visits to Phoenix International Raceway, with great drivers like Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt and the Unsers gracing its Victory Lane.

Another great Phoenix International Raceway tradition began in February 1977 when a pair of races on the track’s oval and road courses were held in a two-day event known as the Copper World Classic. That annual event still draws some of the best racers from several different series to Phoenix International Raceway.

2012 Basha's Supermarkets 200 Winner - Elliott Sadler Returns To Nationwide Victory Lane

Elliott Sadler took the lead with fewer than 30 laps remaining and held off Brad Keselowski over the final laps to win Saturday's Basha's Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. It is Sadler's first victory in the series since 1998 and sixth overall. The win comes in his second start driving for legendary car owner Richard Childress.

Keselowski took second, ahead of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Sadler's Richard Childress Racing teammates Austin Dillon and Kevin Harvick. Harvick dominated the race, leading 107 of the 200 laps, but he was unable to climb from seventh after the final pit stop despite having four fresh tires while the leaders had two.

Sam Hornish Jr., who won at Phoenix last November, placed sixth, ahead of Trevor Bayne and Joey Logano. Polesitter Denny Hamlin finished a disappointing ninth after dominating the race's early laps. Michael Annett completed the top-10 despite smacking the wall hard in the event's middle stages.

2011 Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix Results

Kyle Busch is on pace for another NASCAR trifecta after a flawless performance in Saturday’s Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 Nationwide Series race at Phoenix International Raceway.

Busch, who won Friday’s 150-lap Camping World Truck Series event at Phoenix, started on the pole and led all 200 laps in the Nationwide race. It was his fourth win at this flat one-mile track and the 44th of his Nationwide career, which puts him four victories away from tying leader Mark Martin on the series’ all-time race winners list.

Busch seemed untouchable until the final 25 laps when Carl Edwards chased him down and at one point ran side-by-side with him.

Edwards made an attempt to pass Busch with 20 laps to go, but Busch pulled away a couple of laps later and then finished a half-second ahead of Edwards

2010 Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 Race Results

It was quite a night for Kyle Busch, but like he’s done so many times before, he rallied to pass for the lead in the closing laps and won Friday night’s Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway.

Busch was penalized and started 10th in the race’s final restart, but he made his way to the front with just five laps to go and held off Kevin Harvick for his second NASCAR Nationwide Series win at PIR. AHN

Keselowski wound up third and took a four-point lead over Carl Edwards, who finished sixth. Busch moved to within 15 points of the lead.
