Beating the hockey odds is never something that is all that easy, especially when you consider all of the movement that has gone on this season. Who will lift the Stanley Cup in 2013-14? We've got all of the answers ready for you here at BookMaker Sportsbook.
There aren't many NHL seasons that are going to be as interesting as this one. Thirty teams are going to try to beat the hockey odds and claim Lord Stanley's Cup, and most believe that they have squads that can pull the feat. Join us as we break down all that there is to know about the upcoming 2013-14 NHL campaign.
Between the new divisions, last year's lockout shortened-campaign, and the Olympic break in February, there is no doubt that you need a guide about what is going to happen on the hockey betting odds this year!
We'll start with the realignment. Gone are the old six divisions in hockey, and in are four new divisions which left 16 teams in the Eastern Conference and 14 teams in the Western Conference. In the Eastern Conference, the two divisions of eight are called the Atlantic Division ( Boston, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Buffalo, Ottawa, Montreal, Florida, and Detroit ) and the Metropolitan Division ( Washington, Columbus, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, Carolina, Philadelphia, and both of the New York teams ). In the Western Conference, we have the Central Division ( Dallas, Minnesota, Chicago, Nashville, St. Louis, Winnipeg, and Colorado ) and the Pacific Division ( Edmonton, San Jose, Calgary, Phoenix, Anaheim, Los Angeles, and Vancouver ).
As you can see, the Red Wings and the Blue Jackets have crossed from the Western Conference over to the Eastern Conference, while the Jets have jumped from the East to the West where they belong.
The chase for the playoffs will be quite interesting as well. Each conference will get eight teams into the playoffs as always, but the kicker now is that each division will have three guaranteed spots into the postseason. After the top three teams in each division get playoff spots, the last two slots, known as Wild Card positions, will be determined by the best records of the teams that are left to choose from regardless of division. The two division winners will take on the two Wild Card teams in each conference, while the #2 and #3 teams from each division will duke it out on the hockey gambling odds in the opening round of the playoffs.
This is definitely going to be a huge switch, and it encourages teams to play especially well in their own division. Games that once would have perhaps featured backup goalies to give their starters a day off might be reconsidered at times during crucial stretches of the schedule.
One of the other quirks of the 2013-14 season is that there is going to be an 18-day hiatus in February for the Winter Olympics in Sochi. This ensures that NHL superstars can represent their countries without destroying the chances of success of their own teams at home.
Remember too, that this season occurs off of the lockout shortened season. The playoffs ran long last year, and the offseason was shorter this year because of the Olympics. It will be interesting to see how teams react to the scheduling crunch.
The favorites on the hockey wagering odds are generally the same. The Penguins and the defending champs, the Blackhawks are the two favorites from each conference, and they are +575 and +675 respectively on the odds to hoist the Stanley Cup.
