Philadelphia had the best record in the East record late in the year, but a mediocre finish dropped it to the No. 2 seed for the postseason. The biggest acquisition for Philadelphia in the offseason was goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. He signed a nine-year contract with the team, and is expected to stabilize the position in the net for a Flyers team that has had trouble with it in the past. Philadelphia lost two all-stars from last year in Jeff Carter and Mike Richards, and it remains to be seen how much that will affect the offense. The Flyers were very good at scoring goals last season, as their average of 3.1 per game was third best in the league. Their goals against average of 2.6 was 11th best in the league, which is decent but may be better this season because of Bryzgalov.

The team is going to rely heavily on right winger Claude Giroux for offense. He led the team in points (76) and assists (51) last year, and without Carter or Richards, will need to continue to thrive for the team to be successful. He should get help from James van Riemsdyk, who had 21 goals in the regular season and added seven in 11 games in the playoffs.

The Flyers will have quite a few new faces this season from last year’s successful unit. It’s a risk, but with Bryzgalov sturdying the goaltender position and Giroux and van Riemsdyk leading the way on offense, Philadelphia expects to be right in the mix once again for the Stanley Cup in NHL hockey wagering.
