In 1974, the New Jersey Devils were known as the Kansas City Scouts. The Scouts lasted only two seasons before they moved to Denver for financial reasons. In Denver, the Scouts became the Colorado Rockies, fifteen years before the baseball team by the same name was established by expansion draft.

The hockey Rockies made it until 1982, when they were moved to what is now their permanent home, New Jersey, and renamed the Devils.

Since the move, the Devils have become a powerhouse. Since 1988, the Devils have made the playoffs in every season but two. With Stanley Cup wins in 1995, 2000, and 2003, the Devils have established themselves as one of the best teams in recent memory.

Last season, the Devils missed the playoffs for the first time since 1996, despite a desperate late season run in which they went 26-7-3. Yet, the heroics came too late, and the Devils found themselves in an unfamiliar place, at home during the postseason. This season will show whether the Devils can harness the momentum of that late run, or revert back to team that started in the gutter at the beginning of last year.
