The Florida Panthers haven't had the best history in the world. They have a chance this year to create some goodness for their fans, as they are going to be competing on the NHL odds and looking to make the playoffs in the 2013-14 season, which is just right around the corner.
To beat the NHL odds, you need to have all of the knowledge at your fingertips for all of the teams in the league. Today, join us as we break down the NHL odds for the Florida Panthers and check out their prospects of being a team to watch out for in the 2013-14 campaign.
The Panthers have had it good over the course of the last few seasons, as they had been playing in the Southeast Division, where the Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, and Atlanta Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets have been playing. None of these teams have been any good, and as a result, a badly run franchise has had the opportunity to at least compete a bit.
Two seasons ago, the Panthers won the Southeast Division, but last season, it was back to the same old, same old. They won just 15 games and finished dead last in the Southeast, which once again was the worst division on the hockey betting lines all year long.
Hopes aren't much higher for success this year in Sunrise either. The Panthers have the lowest over/under in the Eastern Conference at 75.5 points for the year, and they are +5000 underdogs just to win their own division. Florida also holds the distinction of being the biggest underdogs on the hockey gambling lines in respect to winning the Stanley Cup at 100 to 1.
Tim Thomas might ultimately end up on the Panthers this year, and that would have to help out a team that has absolutely nothing notable in net. Florida is probably slated right now to use Jacob Markstrom at the back end, and that isn't going to leave any confidence whatsoever for the hockey fans in South Beach.
Of the men on the 25 man roster, half of them could be 25 years old or younger, but there are others like Scott Gomez that just make you scratch your head. If you're going the youth route, why bring in Gomez? To tutor some of the young ones? That's our only explanation, and it isn't a good one at that.
Florida ranked second to last on the season in goal production in 2013 at 2.3 goals per game, and it was dead last in hockey in goals against at 3.5 per game. It can't get much worse than that ( at least you would think! ) going forward from here, but there is a lot of work to be done for sure.
The history of the Panthers isn't exactly stellar. They only really shocked the world and nearly beat the hockey wagering lines in the 1995-96 season when they were swept the Stanley Cup Finals by the Colorado Avalanche. Since that point, the team has only won one division title (2011-12), and it has made the playoffs just three times. All three times, the Panthers were taken out in the first round. They only have 573 wins in the regular season in franchise history, and the hope for Florida is that it can get to 600 this year. If not, there is no shot of this being the fifth time in team history that the team would have made it to the second season.

How to bet on the Florida Panthers
Sportsbooks commonly use a 20-cent line for NHL betting. The 20-cents refer to the difference in the odds on the favorite and the odds on the underdog. But as with other sports, such as baseball, the odds on an extremely large favorite will often be greater than the 20 cents.
A typical NHL betting line may look like this:
- Florida Panthers -130
- Calgary Flames +110
This means is that Florida Panthers bettors are asked to risk $130 to win $100, while Calgary Flames bettors risk $100 to win $110.
The Puck Line
While betting on the winner of the game, as shown above, is the most popular method of betting the NHL, there is also the puck line, which is quite similar to the run line in baseball. When betting the puck line, bettors can either lay goals with the favorite or take goals with the underdog.
A puck line for NHL Betting would look like this:
- Florida Panthers -1.5 ( +200)
- Calgary Flames +1.5 ( -240)
Calgary Flames bettors will win their wagers if Calgary wins the game or losses by one goal, while Florida Panthers bettors can only win their wagers if their team wins by two goals or more. Calgary Flames bettors are also asked to risk $240 to $100 and Florida Panthers bettors are risking $100 to win $200.
The Grand Salami is practically an institution for hockey bettors. The Grand Salami allows hockey fans to have a rooting interest in every game being played on a particular day for the cost of one bet.
With the Grand Salami, bettors wager over or under on the total number of goals scored in all the games played on a particular day. If there are 10 games on a given day, the Grand Salami total will generally be around 53 to 60, depending on the particular games. Just as with regular totals, there will be times when bettors are given higher odds on betting the over or the under.
