NHL Betting Online: The Edmonton Oilers once experienced the kind of success known to few sports franchises. One of the few teams that can claim a dynasty in their history, the Oilers were as dominant as anyone in the 1980’s. After entering the NHL in 1979, the Oilers made their intentions known in 1982, when they reached the Stanley Cup Finals, only to lose in four straight games to the New York Islanders. What followed was a demonstration in dominance.

Over the next seven years the Oilers would win five Stanley Cups, with arguably their most impressive coming in 1988, when they lost only two games in the playoffs, including a sweep of the Boston Bruins in the Finals. During that time, Edmonton won three President’s Cups and led the league in scoring four straight times.

That feeling did not last. This last season marked the fifth straight year the Oilers missed the playoffs. Finishing dead last in the NHL, last season’s Oilers team was one of the worst in franchise history. The Oilers owned the worst goal differential in the league, and outscored only Ottawa, and even then only by a single goal.

This season could be more of the same for Edmonton, as they hope their top overall pick in this year’s draft, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, can provide a spark for a downtrodden franchise that was once the envy of the rest of the hockey world.
