NHL Betting Online: The Colorado Avalanche started their tenure in Denver about as well as one could imagine. For 23 years in Quebec, the team then known as the Nordiques experienced bouts of inconsistency. Moving to the NHL in 1979, the Nordiques struggled on the ice. Over a seven-year span, Quebec finished last in their division each year, and last in all of hockey three times.

Then, after a lengthy, ugly holdout from 1991 draft pick Eric Lindros resulted in a massive trade with the Philadelphia Flyers, which landed Quebec, among others, Peter Forsberg, who would go on to become one of the top players in franchise history.

After the trade came success, as the Nordiques made the playoffs and eventually captured their division title. However, Quebec was simply not a big enough market for the team to survive, so in 1995 they were moved to Colorado and renamed the Avalanche.

Fans in Denver were immediately spoiled, as the Avalanche won the Pacific Division title in their debut year and entered the playoffs as the second seed in the Western Conference. The Avalanche would rush through the playoffs, winning each of the first three series in six games. Then, in the Stanley Cup, Colorado dismantled the Florida Panthers in four straight to sweep the series and take home the Championship in their first season in Denver.

They added another Stanley Cup in 2001, but since the lockout season, Colorado’s road has been rocky. In the six years since the lockout, the Avalanche have alternated playoff years. Last year saw the Avalanche record their lowest point total since they moved to Denver. The 288 goals allowed ranked last in the league. If they want to make any sort of move back to the playoffs this year, then the Avalanche will have to shore up the shoddy defense. Otherwise, it could be another season at the bottom of the barrel.
