2011 US Open Winner - Congratulations for McIlroy after US Open

Tributes and messages of praise have flooded in for golfer Rory McIlroy after his sensational US Open win on Sunday night at Congressional.

The 22-year-old from Hollywood, Co Down, secured his first major title with an eight shot victory last night, and is the youngest champion since Bobby Jones in 1923.

Leading the tributes to the young golfer, were his fellow golfers, Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell.

Harrington, who is a triple major champion, said McIlroy had set himself apart in potential.

While last year’s US Open champion Graeme McDowell described his fellow Northern Irishman as the best player he had ever seen.

Holding his nerve and composure, Rory silenced many critics with his maturity over the past four days; a complete reversal of the 22-year-old who suffered a meltdown at the Masters back in April, and Graeme McDowell had only praise for the golfer.

US OPEN 2010: Nerveless Graeme McDowell finally ends Britain's 40-year wait to claim US Open crown

Graeme McDowell grew up playing golf on one of the world's best courses in Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. On a wild and wonderful afternoon over another equally cherished links in Pebble Beach, the 30-year-old Ulsterman ended Britain's 40 year wait for a winner of the United States Open.

McDowell tapped in from just 12 inches to join a list of Pebble Beach champions that reads like a who's who of golf: Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Tom Kite and Tiger Woods.

'It just feels like a dream to join that sort of company,' said McDowell. 'I don't think this will ever sink in, and it might be a while before I'm sober.'

McDowell kept his nerve on an afternoon when all around him were losing theirs. When even Woods was admitting to mental mistakes and the third round leader  Dustin Johnson was imploding so spectacularly he will enter the history books as the definitive example of what pressure can do to a man.
