The United States has captured glory in the Ryder Cup 25 times, while the European nations only have won it ten times. Twice, the competition has ended in a tie. In that case, the nation that won the Ryder Cup previously retains it.

The Europeans held the Ryder Cup from 1985 until 1991, then again from 1995 to 1999 and from 2002 to 2006. In 2008, while playing at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, KY, the Americans won 16.5 to 11.5 in what amounted to be a bit of an upset.

The United States points system will determine the top eight players for the 2012 United States Ryder Cup Team on Aug. 12, 2012. In addition, Captain Davis Love III selects four players in Sept., 2012, to complete the United States Team.

Qualification for the 2012 European Ryder Cup Team will be selected employing several criteria. The leading five players on the Ryder Cup European points list at the conclusion of the 2012 Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. The leading five players, not otherwise qualified from The Ryder Cup World Points List at the conclusion of the 2012 Johnnie Walker Championship. The Captain, José Maria Olazábal, will choose the remaining two players.

2012 Ryder Cup Winner - Europe Wins Ryder Cup In Comeback Sensation

Europe's golfers have produced the greatest comeback in Ryder Cup history to beat the USA and retain the coveted trophy.

Martin Kaymer of Germany sealed a remarkable turnaround for the cup holders - who trailed 10-6 at one point - beating Steve Stricker in his pairing.

Europe captain Jose Maria Olazabal dedicated the win to the late Spanish golfer Seve Ballesteros, who died last year after suffering a brain tumour.

Europe's players wore the colours loved by Ballesteros, blue and white, and each had a silhouette of him on their sleeves.

As holders, Europe needed a tie to retain the cup, but that looked unlikely going into the final day at the Medinah Country Club in Chicago.

However, the team dramatically won the first five singles games on Sunday to trigger the reversal of fortunes, and went on to beat the USA 14½ to 13½.
