PGA Golf Betting Odds: The Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com is a professional golf tournament played for the first time on the PGA Tour from March 20 to March 23, 2008. The prize fund was US$3.5 million with $630,000 going to the winner. This year will be the fourth year of the tournaments existence and will be held in March.
The tournament is played at the Trump International Golf Club Puerto Rico (previously the Coco Beach Golf & Country Club) which was designed by Tom Kite. It is the first PGA Tour tournament to be held in Puerto Rico. Introduced in 2008 at Trump International Golf Club, the Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com is held the same week as the World Golf Championships event at the Doral Blue Monster Course in Miami. Rookie Derek Lamely won the 2010 tournament in only his 12th PGA TOUR start. Greg Kraft won the inaugural event, and Michael Bradley won in 2009.
Since most of the top ranked players are playing in the World Golf Championships in Miami, the Puerto Rico Open provides an opportunity for a young gun or grizzled veteran to step up and into the winner’s circle. In the first three years of the tournament we have seen a rookie and two veterans holding the trophy. Anyone that is entered has a chance to win – short-hitters, long-hitters, rookies, veterans – all have a shot in Puerto Rico.
Last year Derek Lamely finished at 19-under-par 269, setting a tournament record at Trump International Golf Club-Puerto Rico, including a course record 63 in the third round. He followed that up with a closing 66 to claim a two stroke margin of victory. He teed off on No. 10 in the final round, becoming the first player to win in that position since Keith Clearwater at the 1987 Colonial Invitational.
This year’s Puerto Rico Open should be as exciting as last years and with all the young guns and cagey veterans on hand, your guess is as good as mine who will be holding the trophy at tournaments end. Check back March 10-13 and Bookmaker Sportsbook will have the latest Head-to Head Matchups and live Odds to win for the 2012 Puerto Rico Open.
2012 Puerto Rico Open Winner - Rally gives George McNeill win at Puerto Rico Open
George McNeill birdied the last three holes for a three-under-par 69 to rally past Japanese star Ryo Ishikawa and win the Puerto Rico Open at Rio Grande.
Ishikawa, on the anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that left his homeland in ruins, closed with a 68 and had a one-shot lead. McNeill caught him with a birdie on the 16th, took the lead with a birdie on the 17th and added another birdie on the par-five 18th.
McNeill finished at 16-under 272 and earned $630,000 for the second victory of his career. He won the 2007 Frys.com Open in Las Vegas as a PGA Tour rookie.
The 20-year-old Ishikawa, a nine-time winner on the Japan Golf Tour, had his best PGA Tour finish.
Henrik Stenson (71) and Boo Weekley (66) tied for third, three shots behind.
2011 Puerto Rico Open Winner
Michael Bradley took advantage of Troy Matteson's short par miss on the first extra hole Sunday to win the Puerto Rico Open for the second time in three years.
The 44-year-old Bradley closed with his fourth straight 4-under 68 to match Matteson (72) at 16-under 272 at Trump International Golf Club, then parred the par-5 18th in the playoff for his fourth PGA TOUR victory.
Matteson three-putted in the playoff, missing a 3-footer.
Bradley ended up in the playoff after missing a 3-footer of his own on 18.
Bradley birdied the first two holes in the final round, eagled the par-5 fifth and birdied the seventh to reach 17 under. He bogeyed the 14th, countered with a birdie on 15, then missed the short par putt on 18 to drop back into a tie.
Matteson also birdied the first two holes, but dropped strokes on Nos. 4 and 6 and parred the final 12 holes of regulation before losing on the first extra hole.
Stephen Ames (66) and Hunter Haas (71) tied for third at 14 under, George McNeill (69) followed at 13 under, and Bobby Gates (69) was another stroke back. Angel Cabrera (71) topped a group at 11 under.
