European Tour Golf Betting Odds: The Barclays Singapore Open, which is co-sanctioned with the Asian Tour, takes its place on The European Tour International Schedule for a third consecutive year. Previously part of the Asian Tour Schedule for a number of years, the tournament has seen two winners of international class since the co-sanctioning agreement came into force. In 2009 it was Englishman Ian Poulter who captured the title and last year Australian Adam Scott succeeded him, having also won the event in 2005 and 2006 before it was part of The European Tour. Last year saw a change in the tournament's format through an increase in player numbers from the traditional 156 to 204, with the event being played over two courses at Sentosa Golf Club – The Tanjong and The Serapong.
Envisioned by English golf architect Frank Pennick and under the guidance of prominent Singaporeans Dennis Lee, the brother of then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, and Alan Choe, Chairman of the Sentosa Development Corporation (1987-2001), Sentosa Golf Club was carved out of the lush tropical landscape. Mangrove swamps and kampongs were developed into rolling greens that became the Tanjong Course and a modest clubhouse was built.
Over the years golfing grew in popularity, and the club grew in prominence. A mere eight years after opening, the club added a second course, the celebrated and challenging Serapong Course, designed by Ronald Fream. Following that, in the early 1990s the original clubhouse was leveled, and a new clubhouse was built to showcase the magnificent views from the Golfer's Terrace. It also featured expanded offerings such as banqueting and meeting facilities.
With the level of play being raised again in 2005 with the inception of the prestigious Barclays Singapore Open, renovations to both The Tanjong and Serapong Courses took place in 2006 and 2007 respectively.
The Serapong Course at Sentosa Golf Club is widely revered as one of the most finely laid out courses in Singapore-and for good reason. With spectacular views of Sentosa, the surrounding South China Sea, the iconic Singapore harbour and the Lion City skyline, this beautiful golf course merges nature, scenery and rolling greens into a truly unique golfing experience.
Opened for play in 1972, Sentosa Golf Club's renovated The Tanjong Course is among the most picturesque and challenging of all Singapore's courses. Golfers should take time to enjoy the visual treats of the South China Sea as they embark on their golfing adventure around the 6,218-metre (from the blue tees), par-72 layout that features a series of gullies and water hazards as well as diverse flora and fauna.
2011 Barclays Singapore Open Winner - Fernandez-Castano sees off Pagunsan to win in Singapore
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano won the Barclays Singapore Open at the second play-off hole against Juvic Pagunsan at Sentosa Golf Club.
Lightning had dramatically forced the pair off the course having started their play-off on Sunday night, after both finished 14 under par for the 72 holes.
They returned on Monday having each laid up at the first extra hole, and they in turn pitched into six and seven feet. Both missed their putts, though, and returned to the tee to play the par five again.
Pagunsan found the rough this time around and Fernandez-Castano took advantage to leave himself 40 yards closer when hitting his approach.
He then bettered the Filipino's approach to 10 feet and holed his putt to claim the prize.
