Bankia Madrid Masters Golf Betting OddsEuropean Tour Golf Betting Odds: The Madrid Masters returned to its October slot after being played in May in 2010. It was Englishman Luke Donald who captured the title on that occasion at Real Sociedad Hípica Espanola Club de Campo, succeeding compatriot Ross McGowan who triumphed the previous year at Centro Nacional de Golf. South African Charl Schwartzel was crowned champion in the inaugural event in 2008, which was played at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

Madrid has hosted this tournament the previous four seasons and in a short space of time it has thrown up some particularly exciting finishes, but none more so than 2011, when England’s Lee Slattery took his maiden title on The European Tour.

After a tight final round, the Englishman looked certain of victory heading to the par-5 last hole. But the water to the right and the pressure of victory almost conspired to give away the 2004 Challenge Tour Number One’s lead when finding sand and then the hazard down the last. In the end, a two-putt double would prove enough to take the title by one from Italy’s Lorenzo Gagli.

Slattery joins an esteemed roll of honour that includes 2011 Race to Dubai Champion Luke Donald and Masters’ winner Charl Schwartzel, as well as compatriot and fellow first time winner, Ross McGowan.

2011 Bankia Madrid Masters Winner - Slattery breaks through in Madrid

A tired world number one Luke Donald trailed in seven shots behind Englishman Slattery, who closed with a 1-under 71 and a 15-under 273 four round total.

It was a nail-biting end for former shop assistant Slattery before he could ring up the $223,000 first prize.

Leading by three strokes going to the last, he sent his third shot into the lake at El Encin's 18th and needed to ensure he took only two putts for a double-bogey to deny Gagli a play-off.

Slattery led by two shots overnight but looked to have blown his chances of a maiden win when he bogeyed two of the first five holes, conceding his lead first to veteran Argentine Cesar Monasterio and then tour rookie Gagli.

Then the 33-year-old Englishman, in his sixth full tour year and looking to better two runner-up places, came alight with four birdies in five holes from the 11th.

It looked as though Slattery, playing alongside the persistent Gagli, would coast home before his nervous finale.

The winner admitted he could hardly hold the putter before sinking the winning putt.
