First played in 2001, when former Open Champion Paul Lawrie captured the title, the Championship’s final round is played over the Old Course at St Andrews, giving an iconic backdrop to the Pro-Am event. Previous winners include Padraig Harrington (2002 and 2006), Lee Westwood (2003) and Robert Karlsson (2008), with Stephen Gallacher (2004) and Colin Montgomerie (2005) providing home winners in front of the Scottish galleries.

The format is similar to the Bob Hope or the AT&T Pebble Beach on the PGA Tour which pairs amateurs with the professionals.

The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, a celebration of links golf at its finest, will be held in Scotland from October 4-7, 2012. Played over the Old Course, St Andrews, the home of golf, and two of the finest and best known links courses, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns, the Championship attracts the world’s leading professionals teamed with famous names from business, entertainment and sports.

Many of the world's top golfers have played regularly in the Championship including Darren Clarke, Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Colin Montgomerie, Ernie Els, Paul Casey, Ian Poulter and Padraig Harrington.

Among the amateurs who have participated from the worlds of film and entertainment are Samuel L Jackson, Andy Garcia, Hugh Grant, Kyle MacLachlan, Aidan Quinn, Huey Lewis and Michael Flatley. Sporting heroes include Sir Ian Botham, Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Steve Redgrave, football legends Johann Cruyff, Ruud Gullit, Jamie Redknapp and Alan Hansen and cricketers Michael Vaughan and Shane Warne.

2011 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship Winner - Michael Hoey leads a Northern Ireland 1-2-3

Michael Hoey continued Northern Ireland's golfing golden age at the expense of two of his most illustrious compatriots by winning the £3.2 million Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The Belfast man faced down the last two US Open champions Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell to birdie three of the last four holes on the Old Course and claim the £503,000 first prize — nearly £130,000 more than he ever won in an entire season in nine years as a pro.

Hoey, the 2001 Amateur champion, won with a record 22-under aggregate of 266, beating McIlroy by two shots and leaving McDowell in a tie for third with Scot George Murray two shots further adrift.

The new champion was a regular attendee at the old Dunhill Cup and always dreamed of playing in the tournament, but never imagined winning it.
