The final week of the preseason is on the horizon, as players will undoubtedly be ready to start playing with something on the line just around the corner. There are quite a few solid matchups as teams try to whittle down their rosters and decide how position battles will shake out.

Thursday, September 01

Detroit Lions VS Buffalo Bills

The Lions are a fashionable pick to contend for a playoff spot this season after years of ineptitude. The Bills still look to be in rebuilding mode, and the offense needs to improve as they have scored only 13 points in the first two exhibition games.

Indianapolis Colts VS Cincinnati Bengals

Peyton Manning is still recovering from offseason neck surgery, and it’s uncertain whether he will get any time in the preseason at all, although the longtime star shouldn’t need too much prep work. The Bengals will need a more permanent signal-caller after Carson Palmer retired in the offseason.

Kansas City Chiefs VS Green Bay Packers

The defending Super Bowl champions have tight end Jermichael Finley back this season, and he will be yet another weapon for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Chiefs will counter with their impressive running game, led by Jamaal Charles.

Baltimore Ravens VS Atlanta Falcons

There aren’t many question marks for either of these teams. It’s always good practice for a young quarterback like Matt Ryan to go against the fearsome Baltimore defense, even if it is for a limited time.

Dallas Cowboys VS Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins recently signed former star running back Larry Johnson to add to their revamped backfield, which now includes Reggie Bush. Dallas has fewer question marks on offense, so it will be working on little things in this final preseason contest.

New York Giants VS New England Patriots

The Patriots have been one of the more impressive preseason teams in the NFL, racking up 47 and 31 points in a pair of wins. Just imagine what the team will do when quarterback Tom Brady plays a full game. The Giants looked good in their second preseason game against the Bears, but have lost Terell Thomas, Marvin Austin and Brian Witherspoon to season-ending injuries recently. The team just wants to leave this game healthy.

Philadelphia Eagles VS New York Jets

Two teams with high hopes this season face off. The Eagles want to get away from this with players like Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jacksn in good health, because the talent is there. New York is a veteran team also simply looking to sharpen things up before the first week.

St Louis Rams VS Jacksonville Jaguars

The NFC West seems there for the taking, and the Rams are looking like a possible playoff team. Even though the team drafted Blaine Gabbert high in he draft, Jacksonville will go with veteran David Garrard as its starting signal caller, although a good performance by Gabbert in this game could help close that gap.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers VS Washington Redskins

The Redskins are still trying to work out their quarterback spot, as John Beck and Rex Grossman challenge to become the starter. If the decision isn’t made before this game, it could be the determining factor on who gets the ball in Week One of the regular season.

Cleveland Browns VS Chicago Bears

The Bears are averaging just 11.5 points per exhibition game, as questions about the team’s offense remain as loud as ever. There seems to be some cautious optimism in Cleveland behind quarterback Colt McCoy, running back Peyton Hillis and a solid offensive line.

Houston Texans VS Minnesota Vikings

Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams has plantar fasciitis and is unlikely to play in this contest. Texans running back Arian Foster has looked very good early on, and Williams’ injury will make his job easier.

Tennessee Titans VS New Orleans Saints

Chris Johnson’s holdout doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon unless one side or the other budges. This would be the last live game action he could see before the regular season begins, but it doesn’t look too likely to happen at this point.

Pittsburgh Steelers VS Carolina Panthers

Cam Newton should be the starter for the Panthers in Week One, barring something disastrous in this outing, although going up against the Steelers’ starting defense is not an easy task.

Denver Broncos VS Arizona Cardinals

After weeks of indecision, it looks like the Broncos have decided on a quarterback. Kyle Orton will be the starter going into the first week of the year, while Tim Tebow and Brady Quinn fight for the backup job.

San Francisco 49ers VS San Diego Chargers

These two teams always seem to underwhelm when compared to preseason expectations. The Chargers have top targets Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson ready to go in what could be a big season, while the 49ers’ quarterback situation does not look too inviting.

Friday, September 02

Oakland Raiders VS Seattle Seahawks

The Raiders made noise by choosing former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor in the NFL’s supplemental draft, though he must serve a five-game suspension and probably won’t have much of an impact this year. The Seahawks are deciding between Charlie Whitehurst and Tarvaris Jackson at quarterback, and this game may impact that decision.
