Super Bowl XLVI Betting Odds

New England Patriots vs New York Giants

Lucas Oil Stadium - Indianapolis, IN

Sunday, February 5 - 6:29 PM ET

The New England Patriots are headed for their fifth Super Bowl appearance in the last 11 seasons. For the last decade, head coach Bill Belichick and his celebrity quarterback Tom Brady rolled over opponents with ease. De facto AFC East champions every season, they won two Lombardi trophies since upsetting the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI.

The New York Giants are headed to Super Bowl XLVI- with a big assist from Kyle Williams. Filling in for an injured Ted Ginn, Jr. on punt returns, Williams coughed up the football twice in crunch time, including a fumble in overtime that set up a 26-yard field goal by Lawrence Tynes that lifted the Giants to a 20-17 victory against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game at rain-soaked Candlestick Park.

NFL Football Betting Odds: To play or not to play, that is the question NFL owners and players must settle before the regular season begins.

The NFL Vegas spreads are on hold because of the black cloud hovering over the 2011 season. A new collective bargaining agreement between owners and the Players Association has not been reached, and negotiations aren’t moving fast.

Fans and bettors across the globe can only hope that the greedy will eventually strike a deal. If that happens, Sundays will be crammed with football entertainment for all.

The NFL season starts in early August with the preseason. Most teams participate in four exhibition games through early September. The franchises involved in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game have five preseason dates on their schedule.

The NFL regular season encompasses 16 games during a 17-week span. This runs from September to early January. Each team is afforded one bye week where they do not play.

The season concludes with a 12-team single-elimination playoff beginning in January. The postseason ends with the Super Bowl, which has traditionally been played in early February.

Most of the regular season games are schedule for Sunday afternoon. Times for these events depend on which teams are playing. The two time slots are 1 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. ET and the later times normally go to games being played in the Pacific or Mountain Time Zone. FOX and CBS hold the broadcasting rights to all Sunday afternoon games.

There is also a weekly Sunday night contest as well as Monday Night Football. The Sunday night game has been around since 1987 and is televised by NBC. Monday Night Football has been a staple of the NFL schedule since 1970 and is shown on ESPN.

Occasionally, games in the latter part of the season will be played on Thursday night or Saturday. These usually are televised by the NFL Network. There are rumors that suggest the league is entertaining the idea of a weekly Thursday night game which would increase the handle on NFL Vegas spreads.

Also, Thanksgiving Thursday has held games since 1920. The Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions always host these turkey-filled afternoon affairs. Recent NFL schedules have put as many as three games on Thanksgiving Day.

Which teams play which and where is determined by a complex formula. The current scheduling rubric ensures that every team will play each other at least once every four seasons.

Division standings carry a lot of weight in determining playoff seedings so each team will play the other three teams in its division twice. One game is at home and the other on the road. The scheduling gods have placed more division games at the end of the season in hopes of dissuading teams from resting players.

There are proposals from the league office that want to expand the regular season to 18 games. The NFL Players Association is not for expansion because it believes more injuries will occur and players won’t be compensated accordingly -- just another piece of trash in the 2011 collective bargaining clutter.

If the schedule does expand to 18 games, look for more international dates. The NFL has already held one contest in Mexico City and three in London. The Bills actually entered into an agreement that runs through 2012 where they will have played a total of eight games (five regular season, three preseason) in Toronto at the Rogers Centre.

BookMaker sportsbook will have NFL Vegas spreads available as soon as possible. Bettors will want to monitor the board options because futures and propositions will soon be posted. The 2011 NFL season is sure to be an exciting one if the drama ever ceases.
