Like the Star Wars trilogy, a master and apprentice will meet for battle in Week 3 of the regular season.
San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh will gameplan to stop the quarterback he groomed in the collegiate ranks on Sunday, September 22 as Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts stampede into the Bay Area.
Harbaugh recruited Luck out of a Texas high school and coached him for three years at Stanford University. Luck's final year on The Farm was under the guidance of David Shaw, the Cardinal's current head coach, because Harbaugh had already left for his first NFL head coaching position.
On an intriguing side note, Harbaugh actually also recruited Robert Griffin III to Stanford, and told him that they would run a dual-quarterback system with he and Luck. There is no way that team wouldn't have won the national championship had RGIII accepted the offer.
The mentor should know all the weaknesses of his pupil, and the 49ers will certainly be favored on their home turf Sunday afternoon (game televised by CBS). Look for San Fran to open around 7-point chalk.
Week 3 kicks off with highly-anticipated Thursday Night Football tussle on the NFL Network. In another reunion, Andy Reid returns to Philadelphia to take on the high-flying Eagles. The Chiefs defense will need to put in a lot of prep work (and have oxygen tanks handy) to keep up with Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy and Chip Kelly's fast-paced attack. Don't expect a warm welcome home for Reid.
The Bears and Steelers will battle in the second nationally-televised contest of Week 3. Sunday Night Football on NBC features a pair of hard-hitting defenses. Bettors will want to monitor the play of Pittsburgh in Week 2 after the team lost its center (Maurkice Pouncey) and inside linebacker (Larry Foote) to season-ending injuries in the opener.
Don't forget that BookMaker sportsbook will carry a spread, total and moneyline for every contest of Week 3. The third and final game of the week that can be seen by anyone with basic cable comes on ESPN's Monday Night Football.
We're not sure what the scheduling gurus were thinking when they matched up the Raiders and Broncos in what will probably turn out to be a blowout on Monday. Denver, playing at home in the altitude, will be at least a 13-point favorite. Terrelle Pryor looked better than advertised in Week 1 but going into Mile High is no easy task.
There are four late afternoon games on Sunday, including the aforementioned contest between the Niners and Colts, but an early afternoon affair that will attract loads of gamblers is the Texans at Ravens matchup. The defending Super Bowl champs came out flat in their opener while Houston had to mount a huge comeback just to knock off the Chargers. Look for better efforts from both sides here.
The Bills and Jets meeting may be the most boring of Week 3. Two rookie quarterbacks square off as EJ Manuel guides Buffalo and Geno Smith leads New York. Don't expect a lot of scoring in that one (take the under!).
The early and late games on Sunday will be televised regionally by either FOX or CBS. Don't forget that you can gamble on all 16 games in Week 3 live through BookMaker. That's right, you can wager on spreads, totals, moneylines and props during commercials. The advantage of live betting is that you are watching the contest unfold in front of you so you can more easily predict what will transpire.
