The Jacksonville Jaguars should be favored for the first time all season in Week 14.
But they aren't because they don't get any respect from the betting public. The lowly Jags that won just two games last year and have matched that total in 2013 are short underdogs over the visiting Houston Texans, a team that went 12-4 last season, won the AFC South and won the first playoff game in franchise history.
How quickly things can change.
Jacksonville beat Houston 10-6 in Week 12 as 11-point pups on the road. The Texans whimpered into a Week 13 matchup against New England at 2-9. They'll almost certainly drop to 2-10 because the team has imploded.
Andre Johnson called the Texans the worst team in the league. Gary Kubiak has clearly lost the locker room and it doesn't feel like anyone, other than J.J. Watt, is playing with any passion. Furthermore, the ownership is quietly hoping the season continues to tank so that Teddy Bridgewater will land in their laps.
Well, these two league punching bags pair off on Thursday Night Football, which is always televised by the NFL Network. The early odds at BookMaker for this contest listed the Texans as 3-point favorites with a total of 41.5.
Sunday's schedule doesn't seem to get any better until you get to the late afternoon and night games. The Colts at Bengals is by far the best matchup in the early afternoon slate. Indianapolis goes into Cincy as a 5.5-point pup while the total was initially set at 44.5.
It will be interesting to see the stout Tennessee Titans pass defense go up against Peyton Manning on CBS at 4:05 p.m. ET. A division bout between the St. Louis Rams and Arizona Cardinals (-6.5, 42.5) on FOX at 4:25 should be a good one to watch as well. And the Giants at Chargers (-3, 45) outing in the same time slot could produce some fireworks.
But the Sunday afternoon game that every football fan and gambler will want to see in Week 14 comes between the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers. When BookMaker released early lines for this one in the middle of last week, it made the hometown Niners 2.5-point favorites with a total of 41.5.
These two division rivals went head-to-head in Week 2 and the Seahawks walloped San Fran 29-3 as short chalk at home. Seattle picked off Colin Kaepernick thrice en route to the rout. Obviously, the Hawks won't have their rabid fans at this one but Candlestick Park isn't the most intimidating place to play.
All of the first 13 games played on Sunday in Week 14 can be bet on live at BookMaker. That's right, you can gamble on spreads, totals, moneylines and even props while the game is happening.
Sunday Night Football on NBC is also a division dandy, and the NFC South lead could be on the line. Carolina heads to the Big Easy to take on the Saints. New Orleans is pegged as a 4.5-point favorite and keep in mind that Sean Payton has covered 14 straight spreads in the crazy confines of the Superdome.
The Panthers had won seven in a row going into Week 13 where they were hosting the Bucs. They won both meetings against New Orleans last season, beating the Saints in late December 44-38 and winning 35-27 in mid-September. Obviously both of those matchup went over the offered total and Sunday night's opened at 44.5.
Week 14 wraps up with Monday Night Football on ESPN and it could be a solid showcase, if Jay Cutler is back in action. The Dallas Cowboys invade the Windy City to take on a Bears bunch that is somehow still in the playoff hunt. The early odds for this tussle had the home team laying two points with a total of 49.5.
Cutler has been sidelined with a torn quad for multiple weeks, and Chicago's playoff hopes have taken a hit because of it. Well, that and a maligned defense that's missing six starters. Don't forget that Dallas will have a full 10 days to prepare for this contest after playing on Thanksgiving the week before.
