The Redskins organization emerged in 1932 when they were based in Boston and known as the Braves. The team changed its name to the Boston Redskins the following year but then moved to Washington, D.C. permanently in 1937.

The Redskins have won three NFL Championships, two Super Bowls, ten NFL divisional titles and six NFL conference championships during their history. They have advanced to the postseason 22 times and also appeared in, but lost, six other league title games.

The club currently plays games at FedExField in Landover, Maryland. Despite recent struggles, it has broken the NFL record for single-season attendance eight years in a row. In 2009 Forbes Magazine positioned the Redskins as the second-most valuable NFL franchise at $1.55 billion.

One of the ugliest losses in team history came in 1940. The ‘Skins were playing the Chicago Bears and lost the NFL Championship Game 73-0. The margin of defeat still stands as the largest in league history. The loss jumpstarted a dark period as the team would not advance to the playoffs from 1946-1970.

The era of head coach Joe Gibbs from 1981–1992 was the heyday of Redskins football. The team earned trips to the playoffs seven times during that span and won three Super Bowls in four appearances. Washington most recently won Super Bowl XXVI in 1991.

Since the 1992 season, the Redskins have fallen on rough times. They have advanced to the postseason just three times and won only two games while there. Eight different head coaches have attempted to discover the success Gibbs did (including Gibbs for a four-year second stint) but none have been able to.

Mike Shanahan, former Super Bowl head coach with the Denver Broncos, was hired as head coach prior to the 2010 season. His son, Kyle, was brought on as the offensive coordinator but that doesn't look like a good move at this point.

Washington boasted one of the most futile offenses in football last year despite having a Pro Bowl quarterback in Donovan McNabb. By the second half of the season, Shanahan had benched McNabb and replaced him with Rex Grossman, which drew the ire of many fans and critics.

McNabb is still on the team but many speculate he won't be in a Redskins' uniform when the 2011 season commences. Veteran tailback Clinton Portis has already been released and Shanahan vowed more personnel changes would transpire. The theory is that he wants to go young with the roster via trades, free agency and the NFL Draft.

Washington's struggles all start at the top with owner and former general manager Daniel Snyder. The guy is as greedy as the Grinch and even sued unemployed season ticket holders for backing out of their package commitment. Snyder continually makes bad management decisions and Redskins fans can only hope new GM Bruce Smith knows what he is doing.

The Redskins went 6-10 overall in 2010, finishing last in the NFC East. They finished with an 8-6-2 ATS mark and posted a 6-10 over/under record. Amid all the uncertainties going forward, the Washington Redskins NFL odds to win the Super Bowl in 2011 will be low when BookMaker releases its futures numbers, probably around a +5000 price.
