NFL Football Betting Odds: Tampa Bay head coach Raheem Morris has made the team’s goal clear: Win arguably the most difficult division in the National Football League.
Some might scoff at that notion, but after transforming a 3-13 team in 2009 to a 10-6 squad that started 10 rookies last year, it’s not an impossible task for Morris and his staff. But the Buccaneers benefited from one of the easiest schedules in football last season while putting together a 10-5-1 NFL odds against the spread mark and a 7-8-1 over/under record.
Even with a winning record, the Bucs failed to qualify for the postseason. That’s because they play in the same division as the Falcons and Saints.
Oddsmakers expect a regression in Tampa as BookMaker has posted an 8-game NFL odds regular season win total. A couple of Vegas sportsbooks offered 8.5 games which is why the juice at BookMaker is weighted toward the over at -130. The Bucs have the 18th-toughest schedule in 2011.
Josh Freeman came into his own as a quarterback last year and could be the next Ben Roethlisberger. He has a penchant for game-winning drives and an enormous frame that is difficult for defenders to bring down.
Freeman is only going to get better and he has two legit wide receivers to throw to. Now with a year of NFL experience under their belts, Mike Williams and Arrelious Benn should be ready to terrorize opposing secondaries. Williams led all rookies in receiving last season and earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
The Bucs found a diamond in the rough when they snatched LeGarrette Blount off the waiver wire last season. Blount is a between the tackles back – he’s not going to run away from defenders but will run over them.
Ball security was somewhat of a problem for Blount last year but that’s typical for a rookie. He didn’t get regular playing time until Week 7 and still ran for more than 1,000 yards. Earnest Graham will serve as Blount’s backup.
Morris has done a superb job with this young team and like the Lions in the North; Tampa Bay could be ready to make some noise in about three years. They just aren’t mature enough to compete with the Falcons and Saints in the division.
The Bucs are picked to finished third in the South at BookMaker with NFL odds of +485. They are +3600 favorites to win Super Bowl XLVI and hold odds of +2100 to win the NFC.
