NFL Football Betting Odds: The 2010 Seahawks could be labeled the luckiest team in the history of the NFL.

While sleeping in Seattle much of the year, the ‘Hawks became the first team in league history to earn a playoff berth despite a losing record. And they did it under Pete Carroll’s new regime.

Call it lucky, call it undeserving, call it the weak NFC West, but Seattle was playing in January and it even pulled off a huge upset in the opening round of the playoffs. With the defending champion Saints in town, the Seahawks were pegged as 10-point NFL football odds underdogs at home but won outright 41-36.

Carroll guided the team to a 7-9 overall record in 2010. They went 7-9 against the spread while posting an 11-4-1 over/under mark. The high number of ‘overs’ was in large part due to Seattle giving up 25.4 points per game – the eighth-worst average in the league.

Team brass let linebacker Lofa Tatupu walk during the free agency period. Cornerback Kelly Jennings was re-signed but there are still plenty of question marks on that side of the ball.

But the offense, or lack thereof, is what everyone’s talking about heading into 2011.

Seattle’s run game was non-existent most of last year because the offensive line couldn’t stay healthy, and because there wasn’t a real threat in the group of tailbacks. Russell Okung must remain healthy in his second season for this phase of the game to take shape.

Mike Williams had a resurgent season at wide receiver and now he gets some help from the signing of Sidney Rice. The website Accuscore projects that Rice’s presence adds about half a win to Seattle’s record.

So who’s going to throw to these big, but not-overly-fast, targets…none other than Rice’s former teammate Tarvaris Jackson. Carroll has already stated that Jackson will enter camp as the starter over Charlie "Jesus" Whitehurst, who isn’t the savior.

Jackson has some talent and actually played pretty well for Minnesota in 2008 before Brett Favre showed up and halted his maturation. He has always been criticized for poor mechanics and breaking down coverages.

Seattle’s offense averaged 19.4 points per game last season, 23rd in the league, and oddsmakers don’t expect it will improve much this season. BookMaker has positioned the Seahawks with an NFL odds regular season win total of six games.

The ‘Hawks have an incredible atmosphere at CenturyLink Field (formerly Qwest) with the 12th Man inducing false starts like crazy, but that won’t be enough to keep them competitive because the team lacks starpower.

Seattle was pegged with high NFL football odds to win Super Bowl XLVI when BookMaker released its futures Tuesday. The defending West champs had +9500 odds to win the big game and +5000 odds to win the conference. The +635 price to win the division suggests oddsmakers expect the Seahawks to finish last.
