NFL Football Betting Odds: The York family is hoping Jim Harbaugh can turn around the once-great 49ers franchise, much like he revived the Stanford football program.
After firing head coach Mike Singletary before the year ended, San Francisco finished third in the NFC West behind a 6-10 record. The team went 6-10 against the NFL odds spread and posted a 9-6-1 over/under mark.
The Niners now have a quality head man, but they’re still searching for the most essential ingredient in a championship football recipe -- a quarterback.
There’s enough talent on the roster that they don’t need another Joe Montana or Steve Young, just a guy that can minimize turnovers and make heady on-field decisions. Alex Smith, David Carr and Troy Smith attempted to fill that role last year but failed.
It looks like Alex Smith is going to be the starter again in Week 1 unless rookie Colin Kaepernick can impress during camp. The gunslinger out of Nevada has a big arm and mobility, but his mechanics need work and it will take time to adjust to the speed of the NFL.
Harbaugh loved to operate out of the “power” formation at Stanford. He always said a solid running game sets up passing opportunities so look for the Niners to be a run-first team all season. Frank Gore, Anthony Dixon and rookie Kendall Hunter should give Harbaugh enough options out of the backfield.
The wide receiver corps is a concern. Michael Crabtree is there but health is perennially a problem. Outside of the third-year player and tight end Vernon Davis, there aren’t a lot of legit targets downfield.
Harbaugh has some work to do on the defensive side of the ball as well. The secondary is old and that’s why the team let go of Nate Clements. San Francisco really had trouble defending the deep ball last year and this problem was not addressed during the draft or free agency.
Harbs will make an immediate impact, in the locker room and on the field, there’s no doubt about that. But will it be enough to win the weak West? BookMaker thinks so as it has positioned the Niners as favorites to win the division at -145.
The team’s NFL odds to win the conference are +1000 and the Super Bowl +1900. Oddsmakers have given the 49ers a regular season win total of eight games. The opening odds had the ‘under’ juiced at -140 so you can see where the steam is. San Francisco has the third-easiest schedule in terms of opponents’ records.
