Coming off a disastrous 4-12 season, the Eagles made some major changes. First, they let go of Andy Reid, the most successful coach in franchise history who averaged more than nine wins per year over the past 14 seasons. Then, to the shock of many around the league, the team's front office was able to convince University of Oregon head coach Chip Kelly to leave the comfort of the Northwest and Phil Knight's cash flow to embrace the NFL betting challenges of the NFC East. Kelly takes over a team with talent at several positions, but also some major question marks.
The first question will be about who is at the controls of Kelly's up-tempo offensive attack. Mike Vick was re-signed, Nick Foles started six games last season as a rookie, Dennis Dixon was signed and has experience running Kelly's playbook, and Matt Barkley was drafted in the fourth round in April; all four have a chance of seeing the field. The favorite amongst the field is Vick, who has the speedy decision-making ability and the quick feet to really thrive in the attack. Add in talented playmakers LeSean McCoy, DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, and there's a chance the Eagles offense could really thrive. All three of those players had down years in 2012, and their improvement, along with a rebuilt offensive line, will be key for Philadelphia.
On defense, the Eagles transition to a 3-4 scheme behind new coordinator Billy Davis. The key, as usual in Philly, will be putting pressure on opponents behind a pass rush lead by Trent Cole. Set to play both outside backer and rush end, Cole must raise his sack total after registering only three last season. The back end of the defense is in transition as well, as big-name cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Roger-Cromartie were not brought back after that experiment proved to be a failure against the NFL betting lines.
Last season, the Eagles were one of the most inefficient teams in the NFL. Their -164 point differential was the worst in the NFC by a wide margin, with their four wins coming by a combined six points. This was despite having a strength of schedule that was in the middle of the conference. Assuming they can improve their turnover margin (-24 last season, tied for worst in the league), and someone figures out how to properly run Kelly's offense, the team should see marketable football betting improvements across the board.
According to several Las Vegas casinos, the over/under for Eagles wins is seven, which would mark a three-game improvement over last season. That seems a bit ambitious for a team that has new pieces in place at several important positions, including head coach. Kelly is an offensive innovator and will have success before long. But entering a division with three other playoff contenders, and a schedule that has them taking road trips to take on Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers makes the under seem more likely for Philly in 2013.
However, from a football betting standpoint, there is room for improvement. The Eagles were also a disastrous 3-12-1 against the spread last season, including 0-7-1 at home. Better play from Vick ( or whoever wins the QB contest ) should improve that mark this year, allowing Philly to stay close in more games.

Football Betting - How to bet on the Philadelphia Eagles
The betting line is a posted number that the Sportsbook sets for each football game. Bookmakers post odds on who they think will win the game. The betting line will usually show a favorite and an underdog.
The Point Spread is one of the most popular wagers in NFL Football betting. You need to cover the Point Spread to win your wager. For example the Favorite in this game is the Philadelphia Eagles as they have a point spread of -3. For you to win your wager, the Philadelphia Eagles would need to have a final score beating the New York Giants by 4 or more points. The (-110) in brackets is the "juice" or "vig" on the wager. The Underdog in the point spread is the New York Giants +3. For you to win your wager the NY Giants could lose the game by 2 points or less.
The example below will show what an NFL betting line looks like:
- New York Giants +3 (-110)
- Philadelphia Eagles -3 (-110)
There are also money lines, in which you are picking who you think will win the game straight up. For example:
- New York Giants +140
- Philadelphia Eagles -160
In this example the New York Giants are the underdog. The +140 means that for every $100 you wager you will win $140. The favorite in this example is the Philadelphia Eagles denoted by the -160. You have to risk $160 to win $100.
Betting on NFL Totals
- New York giants/Philadelphia Eagles Total 33O (-110)
- new York Giants/Philadelphia Eagles Total 33U (-110)
A Total Wager is a bet on the OVER/UNDER for the Total Score at the end of the game, for both teams combined. In this betting line the TOTAL is 33 (-110). For you to WIN the OVER TOTAL wager the final score would have to be 34 points or more, combined for both teams. If the TOTAL score is exactly 33 then the wager would be graded a PUSH and your wager would be returned to you.
The NFL betting line in the above example is for the full game. An NFL betting line can also be posted for 1st Quarters(1Q), 1st Half(1H) and 2ND Half(2H).
