NFL Football Betting Odds: The biggest problem that prevented the Saints from repeating as Super Bowl champions in 2010 was offensive balance.

New Orleans ranked 28th in the league in rushing due to injuries to Reggie Bush, Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory. But the Saints still qualified for the playoffs behind an 11-5 record, which proves how good the passing game is. They were a losing proposition with a 7-9 ATS mark and an 8-8 NFL betting odds over/under record.

The wagering community expects New Orleans to take another step back in 2011. Oddsmakers at BookMaker have posted a 10-game regular season win total next to the Saints. The NFC South could be the NFL’s most difficult with teams like Atlanta and Tampa Bay on the rise.

But as long as Sean Payton is dialing up plays, and Drew Brees is under center, this team will be in the title hunt. The Saints finished first in third-down conversion percentage last year at a 48.8 percent clip.

Bush is gone but the team took Alabama running back and former Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram with their first pick in the draft. He will compete with a healthy Thomas for the starting role.

Darren Sproles was signed to a four-year contract and he serve as a nice change-of-pace player and elite receiver out of the backfield. Sproles will also take Bush’s spot as punt returner, and you can bet he will be more durable.

Guys like Marques Colston, Devery Henderson, Lance Moore and Robert Meachem will be on the outside hauling in Brees’ balls. New Orleans does as good of a job as any at distributing the football.

The defense didn’t produce as many game-changing plays last year, and maybe that’s why it fell short in the end. During the Saints’ Super Bowl campaign, they had a plus-11 turnover margin. Last season they finished at minus-six.

That side of the ball isn’t getting any younger and it could be vulnerable. Roman Harper and Darren Sharper forge a terrorizing safety tandem but the linebacking needs were not addressed. Teams should be able to run at will on the Saints.

The Saints were upset by Seattle in the first round of the playoffs as 10-point NFL odds road favorites last year. They can’t be pleased about how the season ended.

BookMaker opened New Orleans as a +990 favorite to win Super Bowl XLVI and NFL betting odds of +485 to win the conference – third behind the Packers and Eagles. Despite finishing second to the Falcons in the division last season, oddsmakers have positioned the Saints as slight favorites to win the South this season with odds of -110.
