NFL Football Betting Odds: After going 0-16 three years ago, Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh believes the team can reverse the numbers and go undefeated in 2011.

Nobody outside Detroit’s locker room believes the big boy’s bold prediction will come to fruition, but the Lions will be one of the trendier picks at the NFL Vegas odds wagering window each week. They finished third in the NFC North with a 6-10 record last season but were the most profitable betting team with a 12-4 against the spread record. They posted a 10-5-1 over/under mark.

Detroit would have been a .500 squad if not for terrible officiating calls that cost them two games. Jim Schwartz deserved to be Coach of the Year after keeping the young team poised amid those controversies and myriad injuries.

To eclipse the 8-game NFL odds regular season win total offered by BookMaker, Matthew Stafford must stay healthy. He missed 13 games last year and six the season before. Stafford’s been labeled injury-prone because of recurring shoulder problems. This offseason, he guaranteed he would play every game. Jahvid Best is the other part of this injury caveat. He suffered from turf toe in both feet during his rookie campaign. The Lions need the kid from Cal to be a playmaker each and every week. The team drafted Mikel Leshoure as insurance, and to complement Best as a bigger-bodied back.

If Stafford, Best and Calvin Johnson remain healthy. Detroit will compete, just as it did in 2010.

The other side of the ball still needs work. One of the main reasons the Lions played to 10 overs was because the secondary couldn’t stop anyone. Those needs were not addressed during free agency or the draft so opposing quarterbacks will be licking their chops when they face the toothless Lions pass defense.

But there won’t be many running backs that will find success against Detroit’s defensive line. Suh and draft pick Nick Fairley clog up the middle while Cliff Avril and Kyle Vanden Bosch attack from the ends. The front line accounted for 44.0 sacks last season.

Fairley injured his foot in training camp and underwent surgery. The setback is not considered to be serious and he should be ready to play by Week 1.

The signing of Stephen Tulloch ensures a sure tackler at the linebacker position.

The Lions have the third-easiest schedule in 2011 and perhaps that’s why their NFL Vegas odds to win the Super Bowl have dropped significantly. One sportsbook on the strip moved them from +7500 favorites to +3000 since last February.

There is a lot of potential on this squad, and in three years it could be the class of the North, but Detroit isn’t mature enough to make a run in a difficult division. Oddsmakers expect the Lions to finish last third in the division with NFL odds of +500. They have been tagged with a +2100 price to win the conference and +3500 odds to win Super Bowl XLVI.
