The Cowboys entered the NFL as an expansion team in 1960. They were originally known as the Dallas Steers and then the Dallas Rangers before adopting the current moniker permanently.

Dallas played at the Cotton Bowl for 11 years before Texas Stadium in Irving was completed. After nearly 40 years at that venue, the Cowboys moved into the palace known as JerryWorld.

Cowboys Stadium is a $1.3 billion complex located in Arlington. It is the largest domed stadium in the world with a capacity exceeding 100,000 seats. The high-definition television screen hanging in the center of the field is also the world's largest with dimensions of 160 feet by 72 feet. The Cowboys were dubbed "America's team" during the early 1990s. They set a record during that time for consecutive game sellouts at 160 with 79 coming at home and 81 on the road. The club's vast national following stems from its consistent success as well as nationally-televised games on Thanksgiving Day every year—a tradition that started in 1966.

In 2009 Forbes Magazine ranked the Cowboys as the highest valued franchise in sports history at $1.65 billion. They also yield the most revenue each year, estimated at $269 million.

Dallas shares the record for most Super Bowl appearances with eight and is tied for the second-most world championships with five. The Cowboys hold the distinction as the only NFL team to record 20 straight winning seasons (1966–1985). They only missed the playoffs twice during that timeframe.

The organization's success started under head coach Tom Landry and general manager Tex Schramm. Landry orchestrated the renowned "Doomsday Defense" and had a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Roger Staubach.

Oil tycoon Jerry Jones bought the team 1989 and immediately made wholesale changes. Jones' first order of business was firing Landry and trading lauded running back Herschel Walker. Jimmy Johnson was hired to replace Landry and the draft picks Dallas received from Minnesota in the Walker trade were instrumental in building the dynasty of the 1990s.

With Pro Bowl players like Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, Daryl Johnston, Mark Stepnoski, Russell Maryland, Darren Woodson, Michael Irvin, Nate Newton, Ken Norton Jr., Jim Jeffcoat, Jay Novachek and Charles Haley, the Cowboys won the Super Bowl in 1992, 1993 and 1995.

But that was the last title Dallas captured and the last 15 years have been largely unsuccessful by franchise standards. It was one of the top three favorites to win the Super Bowl last season but the team started 1-7. They finished the year with a 6-10 record and without starting quarterback Tony Romo.

Romo missed the last nine games after breaking his collarbone against the Giants in Week 7. He is expected to be fully recovered for the 2011 campaign.

Leading Romo and the rest of the offense will be new head coach Jason Garrett. Wade Phillips was relieved of his duties following the disappointing 2010 season and Garret, the former offensive coordinator, was hired as his replacement.

But the offense needs to return to the early days of Garrett's tutelage. When the Cowboys were at their best in 2006, they ran the ball regularly. Last year, Garrett turned the offense into an air-it-out aerial attack while running backs Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice were seeing fewer and fewer carries.

Dez Bryant had a ridiculous rookie season before breaking his ankle in the last month of action. There's no question he must be a focal point in the offense going forward but Dallas needs to get back to the ground-and-pound philosophy.

The Cowboys went 7-9 ATS at the wagering window last year and posted a 13-3 over/under mark. The Dallas Cowboys NFL betting lines to win Super Bowl XLVI in 2011 will be one of the top 10 odds, likely in the +1500 range when BookMaker releases its futures.
