NFL Football Betting Odds: The Panthers offense in 2010 can be described as nothing but offensive.
There were a couple of college teams that could have outscored Carolina. One being national champion Auburn, and now the leader of that squad will try to resurrect the Panthers from the cellar of the National Football League.
The shoulders of Cam Newton better be strong because has been burdened with the baggage of this team. For a rookie to turn around a 2-14 franchise is asking for nothing less than a miracle. The Panthers weren’t just bad record-wise; they were the worst team to bet on in the league last year with a 4-12 NFL betting odds record against the spread.
Let us just tell you right now, Newton is not the answer. This guy is going to be the next Vince Young, or worse, JaMarcus Russell.
A guy with his skill set, which doesn’t include accurate passing, can win at the collegiate level but won’t be able to flourish in the NFL. Newton may have been able to throw against an SEC defense but the speed of the professional ranks will have his head spinning.
The good thing for the rookie is that Carolina is still a run-first team. John Fox is gone but new head coach Ron Rivera has already indicated the offense will be catered around pounding the rock. Did you hear that ‘under’ bettors?
The Panthers re-signed DeAngelo Williams so he and Jonathan Stewart will split reps again out of the backfield. Steve Smith wasn’t traded and it’s anyone’s guess what kind of attitude the mercurial receiver will have in 2011.
Carolina ranked last in scoring offense in 2010 with an average of 12.3 points posted per outing. The team ranked 30th in third-down conversion percentage at 30.4.
This should easily be the worst offense in football again in 2011, but the defense could keep the Panthers competitive.
Rivera won’t change from the 4-3 system. That bodes well for Charles Johnson, who was re-signed to a big contract in July. He was the best available defensive end in the free agent market.
Jon Beason leads the linebacker attack as one of the best in the game. And he’s excited about the direction of the defense under a defensive-minded head coach.
“We’re going to dictate what we want to offenses,” he said. “We’re going to be aggressive and blitz-happy and we’re going to force a quarterback to be in some uncomfortable situations.”
Beason went on to say that the Panthers blitzed about 30 percent of the time in 2010 but will blitz about 65 or 70 percent of the downs in 2011.
Overall, the Panthers should improve and that’s why oddsmakers have slapped them with a 4.5-game regular season win total. The juice is weighted toward the over at -125 so there are some believers, but there are going to be plenty of growing pains for the young quarterback. Also, Carolina has the NFL’s most difficult schedule in 2011.
BookMaker opened Carolina with the highest NFL betting odds to win the Super Bowl next season at +20000. The Panthers are tied with Washington with the highest odds to win the conference at +10000. They have been given little to no shot to win the division with odds of +2500.
