NFL Football Betting Odds: The Panthers' greatest stride this off season was getting healthy again, after last year's defense was derailed early on by a spate of injuries. The Panthers already have linebacker Jon Beason back on the field, and they hope to get defensive tackle Ron Edwards and linebacker Thomas Davis back for the start of camp, to augment a young core of players with potential.
Fixing a defense that ranked 28th in the league in 2011 will be a priority, after the offense righted itself under the leadership of Cam Newton and offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski last season. They're not looking for dominance, but getting the defense to an acceptable level (think the Peyton Manning-era Colts defenses) should be enough to allow them to push for a playoff spot this year.
From a personnel standpoint, the Panthers made only minor tweaks this off season Fullback Mike Tolbert got the biggest contract of the lot (four years, $8.4 million), and they envision him playing a big role in the kicking game. Their free agency additions were primarily to help fix their league-worst special teams, and to add some competition at a few positions where they'd like to push young players into better performance.
The only significant difference on offense was the departure of second tight end Jeremy Shockey, as wide receiver Brandon LaFell was expected to supplant Legedu Naanee anyway. Shockey wasn't offered a new deal after a successful year, so as they did with LaFell, they're pushing Gary Barnidge to the front in hopes he'll grow into a bigger role.
Bookmaker has the regular season wins for the Panthers up at 8un45 and that seems a bit lofty for a team that won just six games a year ago. Carolina's schedule is tough enough when you have to play New Orleans and Atlanta twice a year, but then you throw in non-division games at Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, Kansas City, and San Diego, along with home games versus Dallas, Denver and Giants, and you have yourself a very, very tough schedule. Bet UNDER 8 wins for the Panthers in 2012.
Fantasy Slant: Cam Newton is a freak athlete and can be viewed as a top ten QB on draft day. Steve Smith is getting up there in years but still is a quality #2 WR and can be targeted in the 5-6 rounds on draft day. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathon Stewart will fight over carries confusing owners when and when not to play them – stay away from both if you can. TE Greg Olsen is one of Newton's favorite red-zone targets and is a low-end #1 fantasy starter.
Even with the vast improvement of Cam Newton, the Panthers are a long shot to do much according to Bookmaker's latest odds; Super Bowl odds of +3500, odds of +2000 to win the NFC Conference and are picked to finish third in their division with odds of +550.

Football Betting - How to bet on the Carolina Panthers
The betting line is a posted number that the Sportsbook sets for each football game. Bookmakers post odds on who they think will win the game. The betting line will usually show a favorite and an underdog.
The Point Spread is one of the most popular wagers in NFL Football betting. You need to cover the Point Spread to win your wager. For example the Favorite in this game is the Carolina Panthers as they have a point spread of -3. For you to win your wager, the Carolina Panthers would need to have a final score beating the New York Giants by 4 or more points. The (-110) in brackets is the "juice" or "vig" on the wager. The Underdog in the point spread is the New York Giants +3. For you to win your wager the NY Giants could lose the game by 2 points or less.
The example below will show what an NFL betting line looks like:
- New York Giants +3 (-110)
- Carolina Panthers -3 (-110)
There are also money lines, in which you are picking who you think will win the game straight up. For example:
- New York Giants +140
- Carolina Panthers -160
In this example the New York Giants are the underdog. The +140 means that for every $100 you wager you will win $140. The favorite in this example is the Carolina Panthers denoted by the -160. You have to risk $160 to win $100.
Betting on NFL Totals
- New York giants/Carolina Panthers Total 33O (-110)
- new York Giants/Carolina Panthers Total 33U (-110)
A Total Wager is a bet on the OVER/UNDER for the Total Score at the end of the game, for both teams combined. In this betting line the TOTAL is 33 (-110). For you to WIN the OVER TOTAL wager the final score would have to be 34 points or more, combined for both teams. If the TOTAL score is exactly 33 then the wager would be graded a PUSH and your wager would be returned to you.
The NFL betting line in the above example is for the full game. An NFL betting line can also be posted for 1st Quarters(1Q), 1st Half(1H) and 2ND Half(2H).
