NFL Football Betting Odds: The Falcons flew toward prominence last year and expectations heading into 2011 have heightened.

It will be difficult to improve on the 13-win campaign and top seed in the NFC, but there is no reason to believe Atlanta won’t be in the Super Bowl mix again. The Dirty Birds went 11-5 against the spread last year while posting a 9-5-2 NFL odds over/under mark.

Mike Smith has flipped the light on the future of this organization. The head coach runs a no-nonsense type of program. The offense operates with a workmanlike approach -- running the ball to open passing lanes while converting a high percentage of third downs – and the defense is opportunistic.

Matt Ryan is molding into an elite NFL quarterback and Roddy White enjoyed his finest season as a pro in 2010 with 115 catches, 1,389 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. Michael Turner recovered from a subpar and injury-plagued 2009 season with 1,371 yards and 12 touchdowns.

These three pieces allow the offense to be one of the most balanced in the NFL. It’s still a run-first team, but the playbook is growing for Ryan and his receivers. The Falcons ranked fifth in the league in scoring last season (25.9 ppg), third in third-down conversion rate (46.7) and first in the NFC in turnover margin (plus-14).

Cornerback Brent Grimes enjoyed a breakout year and the defense was solid against the pass. Stopping the run was even better as the Falcons surrendered the 10th-fewest rushing yards in the league. Overall, the scoring defense ranked with at 18.0 points per game allowed.

Atlanta made some noise in the NFL Draft after trading up for receiver Julio Jones. This certainly gives Ryan another big target to throw to but many perceive Jones and White as receivers with similar skill sets.

Other moves made by the Falcons during the offseason were re-signing Tyson Clabo and acquiring Ray Edwards. Edwards has registered 21.5 sacks and 63 quarterback hurries over the last two years and will join John Abraham to form an elite duo of defensive ends.

This isn’t the most entertaining team to watch, but it’s got a solid foundation. The Falcons elevated from mediocre to elite in one season so how far can they fly in 2011?

BookMaker opened the Falcons’ NFL odds regular season win total at 10 games. That’s a little surprising considering that some shops in Vegas sent out 10.5 and the team had 13 wins last year.

Oddsmakers have given them +1150 NFL odds to win Super Bowl XLVI and a +700 price to win the conference. Despite capturing the South title last year, Atlanta is the second-favorite to win the division behind New Orleans with odds of +110.
