NFL Football Betting Odds: The quarterback position in the desert has been a mess since the departure of Kurt Warner so the Cardinals invested a lot in their newest under-center gamble.
Kevin Kolb was brought over in a trade from the Eagles, who received Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a draft pick in exchange. Arizona hopes Kolb can improve on a last-place finish and 5-11 record in 2010.
Overvalued after winning the division the season before, the Cardinals were one of the worst bets at the sportsbook last year as they went 5-11 against the NFL wagering lines spread. Ten of their games went ‘over’ the betting total in large part because the defense quit midway through the season.
The scoring defense ranked 30th in the league after giving up an average of 27.1 points per game.
Stopping the run proved to be especially difficult as the Cardinals allowed more than 145 yards per on the ground. With DRC gone, Darnell Dockett is the only household name left on this side of the ball.
It looks like rookie Patrick Patterson will start at right cornerback but the other side is still to be determined. The offense better be able to keep up with the points allowed by the defense in 2011.
And the only way that is going to happen is if the O-line can block. That was, and still is, the biggest problem for Ken Whisenhunt heading into the season.
Alan Faneca retired, tackles Brandon Keith and Levi Brown were just awful last year and center Lyle Sendlein is unsigned. Arizona tried to ship right guard Deuce Lutui to the Bengals but he flunked the physical because he was overweight. Now that’s commitment to your job.
Without quality blocking there is no running game and without a running game there is no passing game. The Cardinals ranked 27th in the NFL in scoring last season at 18.1 points per outing. They had the worst third-down conversion percentage (27.8).
Steve Breaston is gone so Larry Fitzgerald is going to be triple-teamed this season. And Tim Hightower won’t be around to complement Beanie Wells in the backfield because he was signed by Washington.
Football Outsiders projects Kolb will add 0.8 wins to the Cardinals’ win total this season. After getting traded, oddsmakers in Vegas moved the team’s win total from 6 to 7, but then the sharps hammered the ‘under’ and it dropped to 6.5.
When BookMaker released its futures NFL lines on Tuesday, the regular season win total was listed at 7 while carrying an ‘under’ juice of -125. The thing that could push this bet over is that Arizona has the easiest strength of schedule in 2011.
The Cards are picked to finish third in the West Division with odds of +600. They have been tagged with lofty NFL wagering lines to win the conference at +5000 and Super Bowl at +9500.
