Online College Football Betting Odds - North Carolina State University began play as an organized college football program in 1892.
The Wolfpack compete at the Football Bowl Subdivision level and play in the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The school name is often shortened to NC State. The team carries a win-loss-tie record of 543-531-55 and has won 11 conference titles and 13 bowl games (25 appearances) in its history.
Since 1966, the Wolfpack have called Carter-Finley Stadium home. The grass, 57,583-seat venue is located in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 2010, the team restored the tradition of having a live mascot on the field. A Tamaskan dog named "Tuffy" is the mascot.
When NC State began play in 1892 the school was actually called The North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts and the team mascot was the Farmers – consistent with many A&M athletic programs around the country.
The first coach in school history was Bart Gatling. He was only able to record one winning season during the first eight seasons. State did not award scholarships to football players until 1933 so it was somewhat at a disadvantage.
Mickey Whitehurst was at the helm in 1907 and the Farmers won the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship behind a 6-0-1 record. They took home another title in 1910 under head coach Edward Green. State won its third SAIAA crown in 1913 with a 6-1 win-loss mark.
Following World War I, an influenza outbreak swept through campus. The student body, and football team, was depleted. Practice was put on hold for five weeks during the season and after the team was able to get back on the field, it was well behind other schools. In the Wolfpack’s first game back, they were defeated 128-0 by Georgia Tech.
NC State joined the Southern Conference in 1921 and would win the conference six seasons later under head coach Gus Tebell.
In 1945, the school named Beattie Feathers head coach and he would become its most successful coach. But his 37-38-8 record in eight seasons speaks to the prolonged mediocrity of the program.
Feathers led the Pack to their first bowl game in 1947. Playing in the second annual Gator Bowl, they were defeated by Oklahoma, 34-13.
NC State joined the newly-formed Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953. Under head coach Doc Newton, the Wolfpack finished 1-9 in their inaugural ACC campaign.
Tom O'Brien is the current head man at NC State and enters his fourth year with the school in 2011. In 2010, he led the team to its first nine-win season since 2003 after defeating West Virginia in the Champs Sports Bowl. The Wolfpack finished tied for second in the Atlantic Division.
The team’s most heated football rivalry is with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The nearby schools first played on October 12, 1894 and UNC won 44-0. NC State didn’t win a game against the Tar Heels until 1920, and trail in the all-time series 31-63-6.
A few notable football players that attended North Carolina State University are Philip Rivers, Mario Williams, Dennis Byrd, Torry Holt and Ted Brown. Rivers and Brown are currently the ACC’s career passing and rushing leaders.
