Online College Football Betting Odds - The University of Missouri began play as an independent college football program in 1890. The Tigers currently reside in the North Division of the Football Bowl Subdivision’s Big 12 Conference.
Missouri, often called Mizzou by fans and media, holds an all-time record of 622-515-52. The team has yet to win a national championship but does have 15 conference titles, three division titles and 12 bowl victories (28 appearances) in its record books.
The Tigers play home games at Faurot Field in Columbia, Missouri. The venue is affectionately referred to as "The Zou." The stadium seats 71,004 and has a FieldTurf playing surface.
The NCAA recognizes Missouri as the school that invented the Homecoming ceremony. It was the first to organize one in 1911 and the event has developed into a national ritual among colleges and high schools.
Missouri joined the Western Interstate University Football Association in 1892 before reverting back to independency from 1898 to 1906. In 1907, the Tigers were added to the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (which later became the Big Eight) where they stayed until 1996. That year, the Big 12 Conference was formed and Mizzou has been a member since.
Don Faurot was the first instrumental head coach of the Tigers. He took over in 1935 and held the position until 1956.
Faurot was most recognized for creating the Split-T option offense in 1941. Multiple formations used today are variations of the Split-T, including the Wishbone, I-attack and Wing-T.
In 19 years as head coach, Faurot finished with a 101-79-10 record. He won the school’s first Big Six title in 1939 with All-America quarterback Paul Christman. Faurot became Missouri’s athletic director in 1956. When he arrived as head coach the program was $500,000 in debt but when he retired in 1967 it was well in the black.
Dan Devine was hired in 1957 to replace Faurot. Devine would become the all-time winningest coach in Missouri history with a 92-38-7 career record. The Tigers finished ranked in the top 20 nine times under Devine and won four bowl games.
In 1960, the Tigers achieved a No. 1 ranking after starting the season 9-0. They only needed a win over Kansas in the season finale to clinch the national championship. Missouri entered the game as a 7-point favorite but was upset 23-7.
The loss was later erased from the record books because Kansas had dressed an ineligible player. Missouri would retroactively win the national title but it is not recognized.
Gary Pinkel became head coach in 2001 and enters his 11th season at the helm in 2011. Pinkel has guided the Tigers to seven bowl games in 10 years, winning three, and three North Division titles. He owns a 77-49-0 record at Mizzou.
Another notable achievement during Pinkel’s tenure came in 2003 when the Tigers snapped a 24-year losing streak to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Pinkel also led the team to its first win over Oklahoma since 1998 with a 36-27 victory in 2010. The Sooners were positioned No. 1 in the BCS rankings at the time and the loss effectively ended their national championship hopes.
While those were historic wins, Pinkel has not exactly fared well against elite competition. Since he took over, Mizzou is 8-24 versus schools ranked in the AP top 25 and 3-13 against teams in the top 15.
The Missouri and Nebraska rivalry was the third-oldest west of the Mississippi River. The schools played annually for the Victory Bell. But October 30, 2010 marked the final regular-season meeting between the programs for the foreseeable future because Nebraska moved to the Big Ten.
There are currently 17 players in the NFL that played for the Tigers. A few notable names include Blaine Gabbert, Sean Weatherspoon, Jeremy Maclin and Brad Smith.
