Online College Football Betting Odds - Mississippi State University began playing college football in 1895. The Bulldogs currently compete at the Football Bowl Subdivision level and play in the West Division of the Southeastern Conference.

MSU has compiled an overall win-loss-tie record of 500-538-39 during its 116-year history. The Bulldogs have won one conference crown, one division title and nine bowl games (15 appearances).

Mississippi State hosts home games at David Wade Stadium. It is the second-oldest venue in the FBS and seats 55,082.

Some fans recognize the 1940 Bulldogs season as one of championship caliber. MSU finished the year with a 10-0-1 record and beat Georgetown in the Orange Bowl. The team landed at No. 9 in the final rankings therefore Minnesota was named national champion by all major polls.

But the following season proves that end-of-season rankings meant little in those days. The Bulldogs went 7-1-1 on their way to winning the SEC championship in 1941. They beat Alabama that season but despite posting a worse final record at 9-2 and a No. 20 ranking, the Tide were named national champs.

Jackie Sherrill was hired as the program’s 30th head coach in 1991 and he would become the longest-tenured head man in MSU history.

Sherrill led the Bulldogs to a West Division title in 1998 after a 6-2 conference campaign. They lost to the Tennessee Volunteers in the SEC Championship, 24-14.

The following year MSU would boast the top-ranked defense in the country. The team finished No. 12 in the rankings after going 10-2.

Mississippi State made history in December of 2003 when it named Sylvester Croom its 31st head coach. It was a momentous event because Croom was the first African-American hired as a head coach in the history of the SEC.

Dan Mullen is currently the head coach at MSU, entering his third season in 2011. His reclamation project showed signs of life in 2010 as it beat Georgia and Florida in the same year for the first time in school history.

The team went 9-4 overall and finished with an Associated Press Poll ranking of No. 15. The season culminated with a 52-14 victory over Michigan in the Gator Bowl. Mullen operates a spread, but run-heavy, offense.

The University of Mississippi is MSU’s biggest rival. The two SEC programs in the state compete annually in the Egg Bowl. The rivalry started in 1901 and Ole Miss holds a 41-60-6 advantage in the series.

Alabama is also considered a heated rival. Its campus and Mississippi State’s are separated by just 90 miles – the closest SEC schools in terms of proximity. This annual matchup is called the 90 Mile Drive or the Battle for Highway 82. Dating back to 1896, the Crimson Tide have won 73 of the 93 meetings.
