Online College Football Betting Odds - Michigan State University first competed in collegiate football in 1896.
The Spartans play at the Football Bowl Subdivision level and are a member of the Legends Division of the Big Ten Conference. A common nickname for the team is the Sparties.
Michigan State has accrued an all-time record of 627-426-44 during its lengthy history. The school has claimed six national championships -- all won between 1951 and 1966 -- seven conference titles and seven bowl victories (21 appearances).
MSU plays home games at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan. The natural-grass venue is located in the center of campus and has a seating capacity of 75,005.
The Spartans played in the Michigan Collegiate Athletic Association until 1907 when they became an independent club. They officially joined the Big Ten in 1949.
Clarence Lester "Biggie" Munn became the head coach of Michigan State in 1947 and would elevate the program to prominence over the next six years. The 1950s were a booming time for the automobile industry in Michigan and MSU was often called a "football factory."
Led by Spartan legends such as Lynn Chandnois, Dorne Dibble, Don McAulliffe, Sonny Grandelius, Earl Morrall and Dean Look, the team went undefeated in 1951 to claim its first national championship. It actually was named co-champion with Tennessee.
MSU put together another flawless campaign in 1952 but this time was a consensus national champion. Munn stepped down from coaching to become the school’s athletic director after the 1953 season. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1959.
A longtime assistant of Dunn’s, Duffy Daugherty was named the new head coach. He would hold that position for the next 19 years, becoming the most successful MSU head coach with a career record of 109-69-5.
The Spartans won national titles in 1965 and 1966 under Daugherty. A November bout pitting the top-ranked Fighting Irish and the second-ranked Sparties was dubbed by the media, "The Game of the Century." The teams played to a 10-10 tie and split national championship honors that year.
After a 10-year stint in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers, defensive coordinator George Perles decided to try his hand in the college ranks. Perles was recognized for orchestrating the "Stunt 4-3" defensive scheme that helped the Steelers win four Super Bowls during his tenure.
Perles, an alumnus of MSU, took the head coaching job in December of 1982. He led the Spartans to a pair of conference titles, seven bowl berths and a 1988 Rose Bowl victory.
A noteworthy game in the Michigan State annals occurred on October 21, 2006. The Spartans were playing at Northwestern and trailed the home team 38-3 with nearly 10 minutes left in the third quarter. MSU rallied for 38 unanswered points and kicked the game-winning field goal with 18 seconds left to secure the biggest comeback in NCAA history.
Mark Dantonio is the current head man in Lansing. He has put together a 33-19 record at MSU, including a 20-12 mark in Big Ten action.
The Spartans have squared off against the University of Michigan annually since 1953 in an in-state rivalry that awards the Paul Bunyan Trophy to the winner. The Wolverines hold a 34-22-2 edge in the all-time series but Dantonio has gone 3-1 against them since taking over.
MSU’s other main rival is Notre Dame. The Spartans are one of only three Big Ten schools that play the Fighting Irish every year. The Megaphone Trophy is awarded to the winner and currently the Irish have a 31-26-1 advantage in the series.
