Online College Football Betting Odds - The University of Maryland began play as an organized college football team in 1892.
The Terrapins compete at the Football Bowl Subdivision level and play in the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The team name is often abbreviated to the Terps. And for the non-science majors out there, a terrapin is a species of turtle native to the state.
Maryland holds an all-time record of 611-535-43. The team has won two national championships, 11 conference titles and 11 bowl games (24 appearances) in its history.
Since 1950, the Terps play home games at the natural-grass, 54,000-seat Byrd Stadium in College Park, Maryland.
Harry "Curley" Byrd became the first paid head football coach at Maryland in 1911 and held that position for two decades before becoming the university president. The Terps joined the Southern Conference in 1921 and remained a member for the next 30 years.
In 1945, the program hired Paul "Bear" Bryant as head coach. But after President Byrd reinstated a player that Bryant suspended the head coach became furious and left after one season. Die-hard Maryland fans often wonder what could have been had one of the most prolific coaches in NCAA football history not resigned.
Jim Tatum was hired as Bryant’s replacement in 1947. He was the Terps sixth head coach in eight years but would become the winningest Maryland man in school history. During Tatum’s tenure, the Terps won both of its national titles, three conference championships while producing three undefeated seasons and six top 20 rankings. They had a winning record all nine seasons Tatum was there and made five bowl appearances.
Maryland and six other schools left the Southern Conference in 1953 to form the Atlantic Coast Conference. In their inaugural ACC season, the Terps earned conference co-championship honors alongside Duke and their second national title.
A lengthy stretch of futility followed as the Terrapins went just 50-100-1 from 1956 to 1971. There were only three winning seasons during that timeframe.
But in 1972, Jerry Claiborne took over as head coach and the team returned to prominence. Claiborne ran a very pedestrian, run-heavy offense.
Bobby Ross took over a decade later and his offensive philosophy was quite the opposite of Claiborne’s. Ross utilized a West Coast system where the quarterback would run bootlegs and play-action sets. Boomer Esiason, the starting signal caller at the time, credits Ross’s system as to how he was able to play in the NFL.
From 1986 to 2000, Maryland slipped back into another period of poor performance, which was sparked by an untimely death. Len Bias, a Terrapin basketball player selected No. 2 overall by the Celtics in 1986, died of a cocaine overdose before playing an NBA game.
After that tragic year, the Terps went 55-88 with only two winning seasons and one bowl berth until 2000.
Ralph Friedgen was brought in in 2001 as head coach and he led the Terps to an ACC championship in his first year. Friedgen was known as an offensive mastermind and kept Maryland competitive over the next decade. But citing lack of fan support, school brass fired Friedgen following the 2010 campaign and hired former Connecticut head coach Randy Edsall.
Maryland has an out-of-conference rivalry with West Virginia of the Big East. The Mountaineers have faced the Terrapins 46 times since their first game in 1919.
Another uncommon rival for the Terps is Navy. Both schools are based in Maryland and the winner of the annual Crab Bowl Classic is awarded the Crab Bowl Trophy.
