Online College Football Betting Odds - Florida State University is one of the most successful programs in the history of college football.
The Seminoles compete at the Football Bowl Subdivision level and play in the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The team is often called FSU or the ‘Noles.
Florida State began play in 1947 and has compiled an overall record of 469-225-18. During its prolific history, the team has earned two national championships, 15 conference titles and 24 bowl victories (40 appearances).
Comparing against other programs, FSU holds the third-highest winning percentage (77 percent) among FBS teams over the last 25 years.
The Seminoles play home games at Doak Campbell Stadium, which is a grass, 82,300-seat venue located on campus in Tallahassee. An actual Seminole tribe member rides around the stadium on a horse before each home game, adorned with a head dress and spear.
FSU’s first coach in 1948 was Don Veller. He and his successor, Tom Nugent, put the ‘Noles on the college football map after a decade of competitive play.
Bill Peterson took over for Nugent in 1960 and the program rose to national prominence. The Seminoles defeated the Florida Gators for the first time in 1964 under Peterson and he also led them to their first major bowl bid and top 10 ranking.
Peterson’s vision for the program would not end there. He would provide a job opportunity for FSU’s most recognizable and fruitful head coach – Bobby Bowden.
Bowden held the reins in Tallahassee for 24 years. Under his tutelage, the ‘Noles would become one of the most powerful teams during 1990s. From 1987 to 2000, they won 11 bowl games, nine ACC Championships, produced an 89 percent winning percentage and finished in the top five of the AP Poll all 14 years.
Florida State also appeared in five national championships in that timeframe, winning two.
In December of 2009, Bowden announced that he would retire from coaching. Many believe he was pushed out of the position because his skills as a coach, at 79 years of age, were diminishing.
Scandal hit the campus before he left however. In 2007, a total of 61 student-athletes from FSU, including 25 members of the football team, were accused of cheating in an online music history class.
The players received improper assistance from the academic staff which provided answers to tests and wrote papers for them. The NCAA found the Seminoles guilty of the violations and mandated they vacate 12 wins from the 2006 and 2007 football seasons.
Jimbo Fisher is currently the head coach of Florida State. He turned the team around with a 10-4 record in 2010. The ‘Noles advanced to the ACC Championship for the first time since 2005 but lost to Virginia Tech 44-33.
FSU holds rivalries with two Florida-based teams.
The University of Miami and FSU have played every season since 1966. Infamous games include "Wide Right I" and "Wide Right II" where Seminole kickers have cost the team wins after missing makeable field goals. Miami holds the all-time lead in the series, 31-24.
The Gators and Seminoles also compete regularly. They have played 52 times and the University of Florida holds a 33-20-2 series advantage.
During FSU’s heyday, two Heisman Trophy winners emerged from the star-studded rosters. Charlie Ward, who would later go on to play in the NBA, won the award in 1993 and Chris Weinke took home the hardware in 2000.
