Online College Football Betting Odds - Boise State University began play as a junior college football team in 1932. The Broncos currently reside in Mountain West Conference of the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Boise State holds an all-time record of 365-144-2. The team has won two national championships, 16 conference titles and seven bowl games (11 appearances) in its history.
The Broncos play home games at the 33,500-seat Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho. The venue is notorious for its blue FieldTurf, which gives the home team an added mental edge.
The "Smurf Turf" has been a difficult field to face for visiting opponents. Since 1999, the Broncos are 74-1 in regular season home games and are currently on a 62-game regular season win streak at home. The last time they lost a home conference game was 1998.
After joining the MWC in 2011, the conference banned Boise State from wearing its all-blue uniforms at home, citing a "competitive advantage." This makes sense considering the field could essentially camouflage Bronco players.
Before landing in the MWC, the Broncos entered NCAA as an independent in 1968. They then moved into the Big Sky Conference at the Division II level in 1970. That conference elevated to a Division I-AA status in 1978 and Boise won the FCS national championship two years later.
The Broncos kept moving up in the collegiate football ranks, joining the Big West Conference of Division I-A in 1996. Then in 2001, they transitioned to the Western Athletic Conference after the Big West stopped sponsoring college football.
Dan Hawkins took over as head coach when Boise joined the WAC. He won four conference crowns in five years before leaving for Colorado.
Chris Peterson seized the coaching reins and the Broncos haven’t lost many games since. Going into his sixth year in 2011, Peterson has led the team to a 61-5 record, including three undefeated seasons.
Boise State deserves credit for changing the postseason landscape for non-automatic qualifying teams. The "mid-major" programs were regularly viewed as inferior until Boise starting beating some big-name ones. The Broncos have reached BCS bowls twice in the last five years, and were ranked as high as No. 2 in the polls in 2010.
The most memorable bowl victory came in 2007 against Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. The Sooners were 7-point favorites going into the game but Boise pulled off the major upset, winning 43-42 in overtime after successfully running the Statue of Liberty trick play for the two-point conversion.
The Broncos earned another Fiesta Bowl victory in 2009 after defeating TCU 17-10. The teams have met during the bowl postseason twice in the last three years so a small rivalry is brewing. But TCU leaves for the Big East following the 2011 campaign so they will only meet once in conference competition.
Boise State will maintain its rivalry with Nevada, Hawai'i and Fresno State with non-conference home-and-home series scheduled against the schools in 2012 and 2013.
Kellen Moore became the first and only Heisman finalist from Boise State in 2010. The quarterback finished fourth in the voting.
