Utah 30 vs Georgia Tech 27 (OT)
2011 Hyundai Sun Bowl Winner - Utah pulls off stunning overtime win to claim Sun Bowl
The Utah football team has been in some dark spots this season.
The Utes lost their star quarterback to injury, lost their first four Pac-12 games and spent most of the year with a shovel in hand trying to dig out.
They reprised all of that in a dramatic 30-27 overtime victory against Georgia Tech that saw them claw out of a 14-point hole in the final seven minutes of a classic Hyundai Sun Bowl.
"It's been like this all season," said quarterback Jon Hays, who bounced back from an interception return for a touchdown to throw two touchdown passes to the correct team in the last half of the fourth quarter. "It was rough in the middle, we came through in the end."
"Our year in a microcosm," said coach Kyle Whittingham, who improved to 7-1 in bowl games. "We showed resiliency, toughness and character to play our way into this game, and it was the same way in this game. We found a way to win in the end."
Credit for the comeback goes everywhere, but the last blow was delivered by the most likely source, tailback John White IV. Following a motion penalty in overtime that put Utah in a third-and-goal from the 8-yard line, Utah, which had planned to throw from the 3-yard line before the penalty, just gave the ball to White.
He crashed across the goal line to set off a big end zone celebration that left the crowd of 48,123 entertained and ended one of the best of the 78 Sun Bowls.

The Sun Bowl Association started the tradition of sponsoring a football game originally on New Year’s Day back in 1934. They decided on three purposes that they still adhere to today; to present a football attraction of national importance, to promote El Paso and the Southwest and to generate tourist income for the area.
The success they have had for years based on these original goals is impressive, but they should probably adjust their original goal which was to have an economic impact of $200 or more…..I think….I’m just guessing, but damn that was a long time ago. Anyway, they’re doing much better than that as they estimate the Economic Impact yearly now to be $12 - $15,000,000. I could buy a lot of panchos with that kind of cheese.
Some of the individual Player Records at the Hyundai Sun Bowl are held by many of the players you are familiar seeing on Sundays:
Total Rushing Yards - Jonathan Stewart 253 yards (2007 NCAA - Oregon, NFL – Carolina Panthers)
Total Passing Yards – 419 yards - Kyle Orton (2001 NCAA Purdue, NFL – multiple, but now KC Chiefs)
Total Passing Touchdowns – 4 Matt Moore (2006 Oregon State, NFL – Miami Dolphins)
The Hyundai Sun Bowl has been taking care of traditions and bringing quality teams to the table every year for sports fans, and as you can see, you NEVER know what future NFL superstar you are seeing in the early stages of a professional football career.
This is the 77th edition of what has proven to be a solid and reputable organization and event in El Paso, Texas. The restaurants, mountains and beautiful weather are just the beginning of what is always an incredible experience of southwest culture.

2010 Sun Bowl - Tommy Rees, Michael Floyd help Notre Dame dominate Miami
A far-from-perfect first season as Notre Dame coach could not have ended much better for Brian Kelly and his Fighting Irish.
Freshman Tommy Rees passed for 201 yards and two touchdowns to Michael Floyd as Notre Dame beat Miami 33-17 in the Hyundai Sun Bowl on Friday, making Kelly the first Fighting Irish coach to win a bowl game during his first season.
The Irish started 1-3 under Kelly and consecutive October losses to Navy and Tulsa left them in precarious position to even get bowl eligible. But Notre Dame finished with four straight victories against Utah, Army, Southern California and Miami that should buoy hopes for the future of the program.
