MICHIGAN 23 VS VIRGINIA TECH 20 (OT)

Brendan Gibbons' OT FG boots Michigan past Va. Tech, to Sugar Bowl title

Here's another tradition that Brady Hoke has restored at Michigan: Winning.

The coach who grew up in Ohio but revered the Wolverines since childhood ended his first season in charge holding up the silver Allstate Sugar Bowl trophy amid fluttering maize and blue confetti. The Michigan band provided the soundtrack for the raucous celebration: the school's familiar fight song.

Brendan Gibbons drilled a 37-yard field goal down the middle in overtime, lifting No. 13 Michigan to a 23-20 victory over Virginia Tech (No. 11 BCS, No. 17 AP) at the Mercedes Benz Superdome on Tuesday night.

The victory capped an impressive debut season for Hoke, who has led the Wolverines (11-2) back to prominence with a BCS bowl victory. In his usual style, he also deflected the credit from himself onto the senior leaders of "Team 132," as he calls the squad with a nod to the number of teams the historic football program has fielded.

Denard Robinson highlighted an otherwise unspectacular night with touchdown passes of 45 and 18 yards to game MVP Junior Hemingway.

Setup for Sugar Bowl Selecting: BCS vs. BCS (SEC tie-in)

Mercedes-Benz Superdome Capacity: 76,468

This will be the 78th Annual Sugar Bowl, but it wasn’t without a boatload of community support and persistence. In the early days as is with many pioneer achievements, everyone said “It can’t be done.” This group got business and political leaders behind them and even with the depression and shaky times pulled off what may be the biggest achievement in athletics to benefit a city ever.

The name “Sugar Bowl” was labeled from the beginning and stuck. The obstacles this event and community persevered through include a devastating hurricane of course and even a world war back at the beginning when it was the toughest. This dedication and support in New Orleans to overcome the accumulation of this is one of the reasons the city of New Orleans came to be what it is now through the publicity and reputation for what they do when they do what they do.

Welcome to controversy central with these BCS picks and the resulting Sugar Bowl Odds you will be wagering on. Both of these teams are out of the BCS Top 10 and barely qualified for a possibility of being picked. Michigan actually had such a turnaround this year and actually played high quality teams that they beat this year. Virginia Tech hasn’t even defeated any team that made the top 25.

Michigan has to be super pumped to be a BCS qualifier and in a BCS game after the state the Wolverines have been in the last few years. First year head coach Brady Hoke did a fantastic job, and Denard Robinson looks incredible from what I have seen of him this year. They even beat Ohio State after losing 7 years in a row.

Va Tech’s Logan Thomas at 6’ 6” throws a better deep ball this year and can present some problems if he has any time to throw. The reason he might is if Michigan is keying on the only slight reason that Virginia Tech is in this bowl game, sophomore David Wilson.

Wilson has 10 games of 100 or more yards rushing this year and was named ACC Player of the Year. He is fifth nationally in yards per game, and it is a shame the only ray of sunshine on this lame Hokie team isn’t being considered enough for the Heisman Trophy.

Talk about history and then talent and legends along the way in the Sugar Bowl. Tim Tebow played here in his last collegiate game 2 years ago. There are too many Heisman trophy winners to name, but to name a few; Steve Spurrier, Tony Dorsett, Herschel Walker and Bo Jackson. This really is legendary in all aspects of the game.

The ACC is 2-11 all-time in BCS bowl games. You can just make that 2-12. That record is no fluke. It simply shows how weak the ACC is compared to other Conferences. The fact that Virginia Tech is in a BCS game only screwed over Boise State or Kansas State, 2 schools that not only DESERVED that spot but would probably beat Michigan.

Michigan, guided by first year head coach Brady Hoke will hammer the Hokey Hokies. This is the first at-large berth ever given to an ACC team to a BCS bowl which tells me why they let these scrubs in. They’re spreading the wealth, but really it is taking away from another deserving team.

OK, I’m off my soap box which means it is time for you to take advantage of my knowledge at BookMaker. The Sugar Bowl Odds will never get high enough to bet Virginia Tech, so FIRE against the Sugar Bowl Odds on the Michigan Wolverines, because this is Mister Robinson’s neighborhood.

2011 Sugar Bowl - Terrelle Pryor piles up 336 total yards as Buckeyes hold on

Terrelle Pryor and four of his teammates won't be able to play another game for Ohio State until October.

They'll have some good memories to tide them over during the long layoff.

Pryor threw two touchdown passes, helping the No. 6 Buckeyes build a big lead, and Solomon Thomas made an interception with 58 seconds remaining to seal Ohio State's first postseason win against a Southeastern Conference school, 31-26 over No. 8 Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl on Tuesday night.

The Razorbacks had a chance to pull off an improbable comeback when they blocked a punt with the clock winding down. Two plays later, Thomas surprised Ryan Mallett by dropping into coverage, and Arkansas' star quarterback threw the ball right to the 255-pound defensive end.
