Oklahoma salvaged what it could from an otherwise forgettable season by outlasting Iowa 31-14 on Friday night in the Insight Bowl.

Winning the second-best bowl in Greater Phoenix -- Big 12 champion and rival Oklahoma State plays Monday in the Fiesta Bowl -- provides little long-term consolation for a one-time national title favorite, but the Sooners took out three months of frustration on the Hawkeyes.

"These guys persevered, came out here and played an excellent game," OU coach Bob Stoops said.

Oklahoma won its fourth straight non-BCS bowl with aggressive defense, superior special teams and just a smidgen of offense.

Kicker Michael Hunnicutt’s 35-yard field goal with 2:28 to play gave the Sooners a 24-14 lead, and Blake Bell’s third touchdown run -- a 21-yard burst with 45 seconds to play, put it away.

James Vandenberg’s 5-yard pass to C.J. Fiedorowicz with 14:46 to play wrapped up a 16-play drive that ate up nearly eight minutes and nearly sapped the Sooner defense.

2010 Insight Bowl - Marcus Coker runs for 219, Micah Hyde returns INT to ignite Iowa rally

Micah Hyde snatched the ball near the sideline, ran toward the middle of the field, even backward for a few yards before sprinting up the far sideline.

Fill-in freshman Marcus Coker took a more direct approach at the Missouri Tigers: he ran right over them.

Coker bulled his way through Missouri's defense in place of suspended starter Adam Robinson and Hyde scored the decisive touchdown on a meandering, 72-yard interception return in the fourth quarter, helping Iowa close out a difficult season with a 27-24 win over Missouri on Tuesday night in the Insight Bowl.
