Texas 21 vs California 10

2011 Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl Winner - Texas beats Cal in Holiday bowl

Defense wins big football games. Creating turnovers will always win football games. The Texas defense forced five turnovers in this Holiday Bowl — Texas did not lose one — and that was the difference in the game.

Yes, David Ash did his best impression of a real bonafide Texas QB — Case McCoy never saw the field — and Marquis Goodwin outran everyone within 1000 miles of San Diego, but it was the Texas defense — every bit the nasty, aggressive mean-spirited group defensive coordinator Manny Diaz wants — that won the game 21-10 over Cal. Texas allowed Cal only seven yards rushing — total — and they sacked Cal's quarterback six times, a season single-game high.

This is the kind of win that lasts. It’s one thing to beat Rice starting the season, it’s another to finish the season with a Holiday Bowl win over a good Cal team. Texas needed this, so did Cal. Both teams spent 2010 in 5–7 purgatory and managed to flip that to 7–5 in 2011. 2012 looms large for both of these teams and the winner, Texas, takes serious momentum into spring practice.

Holiday Bowl Betting Online: The Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl game in San Diego lives up to its name, and I’m not talking about Education.

The NCAA Football gurus, investors and crooks have this match figured just right enough to get quality teams almost every year. The formula says the Pac 12 No. 3 team is supposed to take on the Big 12 No. 5 team which usually works out, but every once in a while they get a Washington against Nebraska. D’OH! That happened last year but still turned out peachy.

Last year this bowl game had the biggest upset of them all when Washington avenged their 55-13 regular season destruction by upending the Nebraska Cornhuskers in this rematch 19-7. Even though that game was definitely against the fan favorite, there was over $26 million from visitors outside of San Diego County spent on this economy. This all happened in weather that was the coldest ever for the 33 year history of this bowl game. Total attendance at the Qualcomm Stadium event was 57,921.

The Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl started out as a vehicle for the WAC champion to play a nationally ranked adversary (talk about WACKED.) That didn’t work so well for a scrub league like WAC as they may have won 2 of the last 10 games played with this flawed and lame-ass system.

The Big 12 and Pac 10 conferences signed contracts with the Holiday Bowl after the WAC busted up in 1997. Currently, the third selection from the Pac-10 serves as the game's anchor team to oppose the fifth selection from the Big 12 which has upped the Holiday Bowl Gambling (and enjoyment) immensely.

San Diego is another city that has a marked boost for businesses and overall economy for the surrounding area. There were over 40,000 visitors averaging about $1,000 spent in the community for the game in 2009 alone. The impact is measured at more than half a billion dollars over the 30 plus years the Holiday

This is all part of the tourism dollar brought in when all these fans come in not only to support their team at the game, but to make it a full blow vacation. Think about it. All those Nebraskans are leaving snow, ice, clouds and sub-zero temperatures. Who in their right mind is going back ever much less right after the football game is over? The fact that this time of year isn’t that great usually for tourism doesn’t come into play for Snow-Birds leaving total misery of Winter for Sun and Football

The mission of the non-profit The San Diego Bowl Game Association is non-profit, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t bringing in the dollars for all the other businesses ready to produce, pounce and profit. These bowl games are just one marketing tool of many to bring that tourism money to the young, energetic sun and fun in San Diego, California. The fact that they make the bowl games here so exciting and vibrant just adds to the whole California vibe they’re selling, and it is working baby.

2010 Holiday Bowl - Washington stuns Nebraska for first bowl win since 2002

Jake Locker ended his college career with a win that has the Washington Huskies headed back to respectability.

Locker bounced back from an injury he said looked worse than it was, scoring on a 25-yard run in the third quarter to help Washington to a 19-7 victory over punchless Nebraska (No. 18 BCS, No. 17 AP) in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl Thursday night.

Tailback Chris Polk ran for 177 yards and a score as the Huskies (7-6) avenged a 56-21 loss to the Huskers (10-4) in Seattle on Sept. 18. The Cornhuskers piled up 533 yards of total offense in that game, including 383 rushing.

While Washington was a winner in its first bowl game since 2002, the Huskers came out flat in their second straight Holiday Bowl appearance. They were manhandled on both sides of the line and imploded with 12 penalties for 102 yards.
