KANSAS STATE 16 VS ARKANSAS 29

2012 AT & T Cotton Bowl Winner - Arkansas matches school-record 11 wins with victory in Cotton Bowl

Explosive returner Joe Adams had one last big highlight to help Arkansas (No. 6 BCS, No. 7 AP) end a record-tying season in tall Cotton.

All-SEC quarterback Tyler Wilson was well short of the record passing performance he had earlier this season at Cowboys Stadium, but he did throw two touchdown passes after Adams' fourth punt return for a TD and the Razorbacks beat Kansas State (No. 8 BCS, No. 11 AP) by a 29-16 score in the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic on Friday night.

The Razorbacks (11-2) matched a school record with their 11th victory. Their only losses were to No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama, their SEC West rivals who will play for the BCS national championship Monday night.

Adams' 51-yard return early in the second quarter gave the Razorbacks a 10-0 lead before they even gained a first down. It was the first punt return for a touchdown in the Cotton Bowl in 51 years.

Adams matched the SEC single-season record with his four punt return TDs. The senior receiver, who had five catches for only 22 yards Friday, was the only FBS player this season with multiple punt returns for TDs, along with rushing and receiving scores.

After fielding the ball near midfield, Adams took a few steps back before squirting through a gap past several defenders. He got all the way to the opposite sideline and got his path cleared by one last block from Javontee Herndon downfield.

The last punt return for a touchdown in the Cotton Bowl also was by a Razorback, when Lance Alworth had a 49-yard return in a 7-6 loss to Duke in the 1961 game.

The only other 11-win seasons for the Razorbacks were by the Lou Holtz-coached team in 1977 and coach Frank Broyles' only undefeated season at Arkansas in 1964. They won 10 games last season with a Sugar Bowl appearance.

A member of that 1964 team that won the Cotton Bowl over Nebraska was Jerry Jones, the Dallas Cowboys owner who attended the game in his $1.2 billion stadium that opened in 2009. He was part of a loud crowd of 80,956.

This year’s 76th Cotton Bowl Classic sold out of tickets quicker than any other Classic in its history on September 2. The first game was on January 1, 1937 by J. Curtis Sanford before 17,000 fans if you can believe it. It was at Fair Park’s Cotton Bowl then, and now it is almost 100,000 people in one of the most incredible stadiums for NCAA Bowl Games ever.

The Cotton Bowl Athletic Association (CBAA) established their mission to promote, sponsor and stage an annual postseason intercollegiate football game (and post Cotton Bowl Odds) in annual postseason intercollegiate football game in Arlington. Originally, the SWC became hooked up with the game back in 1941. The evolution and advancement of the sport and the bowl process astounds and frustrates at the same time. Watching astounds and analyzing the BCS decisions and their obvious angle frustrates (too mild.)

Kansas State was the first choice if they were available said Cotton Bowl president Rick Baker as he met with his staff for their selections. Not only did they get their first choice but they scored the Razorbacks of Arkansas giving them Cotton Bowl 2 teams whose BCS rankings are 6 and 8. They haven’t had a top 10 matchup since 1994, and damn are they excited about it. Hell, I’m excited about it!

Arkansas Razorbacks (10-2)   Kansas State Wildcats (10-2)

The problem with the Wildcats offense is that it is sad, and there passing is almost non-existent. They are 29th in the FBS standings with an average of 193.7 yards rushing, but that’s just a start in this big boy’s game. The Hogs average over 100 yards more of offense each game than the Wildcats. That is probably going to bite them right in their purple butt.

Talk about being Hogs, Arkansas will make appearance No. 12 this year which is tied for second most with Texas A&M. They last hogged the spotlight in 2008 when they got their snouts handed to them by another superior Big 12 team, Missouri 38-7.

Kansas State has a chance to show the BCS powers to be or not to be, that is just one of the questions. They have to answer to themselves about their last 3 postseason Bowl Game losses in a row, and they should be plenty motivated on a stage like this. BookMaker will have Cotton Bowl Odds among the many other BCS Championship Odds and all the other sports available nonstop and non-hassle.

2011 Cotton Bowl - Jordan Jefferson guides LSU to win; Les Miles' future subject of speculation

Surrounded by his LSU players, coach Les Miles loudly and proudly sang the school fight song and savored the celebration of the Tigers' first AT&T Cotton Bowl victory in 45 years.

It might have been a farewell to the Bayou. Nobody knows for sure with Miles likely a leading candidate for the coaching vacancy at Michigan, where he played and was an assistant coach.
