Florida State 18 vs Notre Dame 14
2011 Champs Sports Bowl Winner - Seminoles' Charge Sinks Fighting Irish
In 96 seconds, Florida State's luck took a dramatic turn for the better.
Offensively stalled for nearly three quarters, the Seminoles used Bert Reed's touchdown grab and then Rashad Greene's TD less than two minutes later – set up by Nigel Bradham's interception – as FSU escaped with an 18-14 win over Notre Dame before a record crowd of 68,305 in the Champs Sports Bowl on Thursday.
The Seminoles had three interceptions – one each by Bradham, Lamarcus Joyner and Terrence Brooks – and FSU held Notre Dame to just 280 offensive yards.
FSU finished 9-4 and notched wins over Miami, Florida and Notre Dame – the first time the Seminoles have accomplished that feat.
"I said this all year: This team has been through a lot," FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said. "They went through a lot of trials and tribulations with injuries, with tight games. A lot of people doubted. But I said all along this team has some special character about it."
The Seminoles improved to 8-0-2 in Orlando and 21-9-1 in bowl games when either Bobby Bowden or Fisher were on the sideline.
But for most of the first three quarters, FSU's offense was abysmal as the four true freshmen on the line struggled to give EJ Manuel time to throw. And while Notre Dame held a 14-3 lead going into the final 15 minutes, the Fighting Irish weren't much better on offense.
