NCAA Football Betting Odds: The Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) is formerly known as NCAA Division I-A. This is separate from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) which was originally Division I-AA. The easiest way for bettors to tell these apart is that there are NCAA football odds every week for the FBS while lines for the FCS are not widely available.

The FBS is comprised of 120 teams that will play anywhere from 10 to 12 games during the regular season. As this portion of the schedule concludes, select teams are invited to participate in bowl games.

The bowl season begins on December 17 and ends on January 9. There are 35 bowls in all and they culminate with the BCS National Championship Game, which will be played at the Superdome in New Orleans in January of 2012.

Multiple conference adjustments will go into effect in 2011 and they will impact NCAA odds.

The Pacific-10 Conference will become the Pac-12 after adding the University of Colorado and the University of Utah.

After losing Utah, the Mountain West Conference (MWC) extended an invitation to Boise State. The Broncos accepted the invite and departed from the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).

With the Big 12 in turmoil, Nebraska decided to jump ship and join the Big Ten Conference. It appeared as if the rest of the Big 12 would disband but a network deal struck by the University of Texas held the conference together.

Brigham Young University shocked the nation by announcing that it was leaving the MWC and would play as an FBS independent. Only three teams at this level are currently independent – Notre Dame, Army and Navy.

The Mountain West lost another major player on November 29 when TCU announced it would be added to the Big East Conference. The Horned Frogs will almost become the immediate favorite when they join the Big East for the 2012 season. Hawaii will take TCU’s spot in the MWC for football only.

Starting in 2013, four programs will graduate from the FCS level to the FBS. The University of Massachusetts will become a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Texas State and the University of Texas San Antonio will join the WAC. The University of South Alabama, which already plays in the Sun Belt Conference for basketball and other sports, will join that conference.

Preseason rankings for 2011 are out and the top two teams are favored to win the BCS National Championship. Oklahoma is currently the frontrunner but futures odds for Alabama to win aren’t much higher.

The Heisman Trophy is awarded to college football’s most outstanding player. After finishing second in the race last season, Stanford’s Andrew Luck is all but certain to take home the hardware this season; before he becomes the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s NFL Draft.

BookMaker sportsbook will have NCAA football odds available in the fall so bettors will want to have their bankroll loaded when that time comes. Futures prices for odds to win the championship, individual conferences and team totals will soon be posted so start handicapping the 2011 NCAA Division I FBS season today.
