NFL Betting Online: A new era of Titans football will begin this year without Jeff Fisher and Vince Young.
Both the head coach and quarterback were replaced by owner Bud Adams following a last-place finish and 6-10 record in 2010. Tennessee underwhelmed at the wagering window as well, going 8-8 against the spread. The team posted an NFL online odds over/under mark of 9-7.
Young and Fisher never saw eye-to-eye and everyone expected the mercurial quarterback to get the boot. But both left because either Fisher got fed up with the situation, or Adams was just ready to see a changing of the guard after Fisher’s 16 years of service with the Titans organization.
Mike Munchak, who has been on the Tennessee coaching staff for 17 years, took over for Fisher in February. Expectations aren’t high in his first year as a rookie head coach. Oddsmakers expect the Titans to finish last in the AFC South, evidenced by NFL odds of +800 to win the division.
There are a few concerns heading into the 2011 campaign, both of which are preexisting.
First, the defense has to be fixed. There is talent on that side of the ball but for whatever reason it was inconsistent last season. Losing Stephen Tulloch will hurt but the team signed Barrett Ruud to replace him. He’s not as good of a linebacker, but he will do.
The second issue is blocking for Chris Johnson. The tackles in Tennessee are talented but the interior guys aren’t. As a whole, the front five didn’t create enough holes last year for the speedy Johnson and when the running well went dry, the passing game suffered.
And this concern only comes into play if Johnson is on the field in Week 1. He is currently holding out of training camp because he wants a better contract. This may end up being a Darrelle Revis situation where he doesn’t join the team until well after the season starts.
Matt Hasselbeck will try to do the job that Young and Kerry Collins couldn’t -- keep opposing defenses from stacking the box with eight or nine defenders. He will have to learn a new offense in the Music City.
Hasselbeck is a better option than Young or Collins but his receiving corps is lacking. Kenny Britt and Nate Washington are the top two guys but they only combined for 84 catches and 1,462 yards last season.
Britt has been somewhat of a headcase during his NFL tenure. He’s had off-field problems and some have questioned his dedication to the game.
“Kenny knows what he needs to do,” Titans guard Jake Scott said. “He needs to grow up. He has done some dumb things, but he’ll get it figured out.”
BookMaker released the Titans regular season win total at 7 with a heavy, -150 juice tacked on the under side. Tennessee’s NFL online odds to win Super Bowl XLVI are +5500 and the American Conference +3000.
