NFL Betting Online: The Steelers narrowly missed out on hanging their seventh Super Bowl banner from the rafters of Heinz Field last year.
Pittsburgh represented the AFC in Super Bowl XLV after winning the North behind a 12-4 regular season record. The Steelers went 10-6 against the spread while posting a 7-9 NFL wagering lines over/under mark.
Ben Roethlisberger missed the first four games of 2010 because of a suspension. Pittsburgh went 3-1 without him, defeating Atlanta, Tennessee and Tampa Bay with either Charlie Ward or Dennis Dixon under center.
If the Steelers could win 12 games without their starting quarterback for a fourth of the schedule, you might expect them to win 14 this year. But it’s interesting to see that oddsmakers have actually dropped the Steelers’ regular season win total to 10.5.
The defense, led by league Player of the Year Troy Polamalu, was downright nasty in 2010 and should be one of the best again this year. That unit ranked first in scoring defense (14.5 ppg), first against the run (62.8 ypg) and first in sacks (48.0) in 2010.
Pittsburgh held nine of its opponents to 13 points or fewer last year. Bettors should always look to play under the NFL lines team total for Steelers competition.
The opportunistic defense helped Pitt finish with the second-best turnover margin in the NFL last season at +17.
Offensively, this team is still loaded with talent. Roethlisberger cut down on his interceptions and fumbles last year which also aided the positive turnover margin. He can still make plays with his legs and has superior complimentary players like Hines Ward, Mike Wallace, Rashard Mendenhall and Heath Miller around him.
James Harrison made offseason headlines by calling out the offense in a magazine interview, but all reports indicate he has kissed and made up with his teammates. The Rooney’s run one of the classiest organizations in the business and they will deal with Harrison’s mouth appropriately. Don’t expect there to be any further distractions.
Although it won the North last season, Pittsburgh is picked to finish second in the division at BookMaker with odds of +115. The Ravens are listed as the favorites with a -160 price.
And while they are picked to win the division, the Steelers are the second favorite to repeat as AFC champions, trailing New England at +420. They have been given NFL wagering lines odds of +790 to win Super Bowl XLVI.
